4 St. Mary's Riddle Hoop Quint A number of St. Mary's high athletes have had little time to celebrate their state B high school football cham pionship. They've been busy practic ing basketball and the Cru saders of Medford have their first contest tonight. They en gage Riddle on the St. Mary's court. Varsities play at 8 p.m. after 6:30 p.m. jayvee action. The Crusaders, again under the helm of coach Bill McKib bin, have seven lettermen on the squad. They are Bob and Dick Evans, Al Yates, Ron Daley, Roger Hout, Terry Cooper and Florian Shasky. McKibbin has indicated that both Evanses, Yates and Hout may be starters tonight along with either Jim Calhoun or Andre Knutson. Bills Eagles Bearcats Miami U. United Press International It seems a pity that college basketball fans will have to wait until next March for a possible scoring duel between Cincinnati's Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas of Ohio State. The top-rated Bearcats and fourth-ranked Ohio State are not scheduled to meet during the regular season but they could collide in the NCAA tournament - if they win their respective conference titles. Meanwhile, Robertson and j Lucas are expected to spend their time battling it out for the national scoring cham pionship. Robertson, who averaged 33.8 points a game while win ning the scoring crown the past two seasons, tossed in 36 . Monday night as the Bearcats whipped Miami (Ohio), 89-58, while Lucas contributed 26 points in Ohio State's 99-66 victory over Butler. Continues Record Pace, Although some observers feel Robertson is so good he has lost his desire for the col legiate sport, he still has total ed 124 points in the Bearcats' first three games for a 41.3 point average. And if "Big O" maintains that pace he could erase the major college career of 2,587 points before mid terms next month. Robertson started the new season with a total of 1,962 points. The record he has his sights on was set by Dick Hemric-over a four-year span at WBke Forest 1951-55. 1 & ' HOLD IT. BUB! Miami University of Oxford, O., tried slow-down tactics on the University of Cincinnati on the Cincinnati floor last night and failed. Oscar Robertson, (12) left, had 25 points the first half which was three more than entire Miami team had. For the evening Oscar had 36 and the Bearcats 89 for the victory over Redskins 58. (UPI Telephoto) All-American Seven Picked San Francisco - (UPD - The boom is on for Ail-American basketball candidates, even before the shellack is dry on the gym floors for the 1959-60 campaign. And, to hear the coaches tell it, there is an Ail American under every bush and every basket. Adolph Rupp of Kentucky says his Bill Lickert should make the first Ail-American team this year, but probably won't do any better than the third team," says coach Bob Feerick of Santa Clara. "And if Rupp says so, it probably is true." "But my Frank Sobrero can play rings around Lickert." But Van Sweet of College of Pacific chips in with: Wright Praised "My Leroy Wright is the equal of any basketball player on the West Coast. He is a Scraps Also working on current squad of 14 have been Alex Mete, . Dave Rouhier, Mike Austin, Fred Burich and Dan Laubacher. . Laubacher is a transfer from Oxnard, Calif. St. Mary's, defending coun ty league titlist, doesn't have any exceptional height this season. Tallest among the 14 listed is Burich at 6 feet - Vx inch. Al Yates is 6 - V4 and Shasky 6-V4. Rouhier is the only other 6-footer. Yates is the only man in the 6-foot bracket among the probable starters. Dick Evans, Hout and Knutson are 5-10 each. The game tonight is not the only action for St. Mary's this week. The Medford club goes to Eagle Point on Friday. On Saturday the four-school Jack son County B league jamboree will be on the St. Mary's floor. Whip 89-58 Two other members of the UPI top 10 also won Monday night. Ninth-ranked Kansas whipped Texas Tech, 85-71, and lOth-ranked Utah turned back New Mexico State, 82 76. , Sophomore Sparks Kansas Wayne Hightower, a 6-8 so phomore, scored 26 points for the Jayhawks, who pulled away from Texas Tech mid way in the second half. Billy McGill, another sophomore, tossed in 10 straight points in the second half to help Utah overcome previously - unbeat en New Mexico State. McGill woupd up with 19 points. Louisville, upset by Geor gia Tech last week' end, bounced back with a 77-61 tri umph over Furman; Joe Scott's 31 points sparked Mis souri to an upset 79-76 vic tory over Indiana, and N,otre Dame whipped Wisconsin, 78- 58, behind the scoring of John Tully 22 and Mike Gra ney 21-. Sophomer center Don Nel son tallied 17 points as Iowa spanked North Dakota, 79-43; Bob Orrill and Gerry Dischin- ger totaled 39 between them in helping Purdue to a 91-79 victory over Pittsburgh; Loy ola of Chicago edged Creigh ton, 69-62; Nebraska over came a 32-point effort by Min nesota's Ron Johnson to de feat the Gophers, .76-66; Ark ansas whipped Tulsa, 65-51; Texas A&M rolled to a 67-49 win over Houston, and St. John's overpowered Fairleigh Dickinson, 101-80. Cagers Said Out Already fine shot and is" great n de fense. I'll stack him up against anyobody." ( Young coach Ross Guidice, of University of San Francis co," has this to say: "We played against one of the finest centers in the coun tryin Billy Joe Price of New Mexico State last week. "But I told my boys they hadn't seen anything yet. If they thought Price was good wait until they tangle with Darrel Imhoff of California this week. Then they'll know about All-Amerlcan centers."
