St. Mary's
Riddle Hoop Quint
A number of St. Mary's
high athletes have had little
time to celebrate their state
B high school football cham
pionship. They've been busy practic
ing basketball and the Cru
saders of Medford have their
first contest tonight. They en
gage Riddle on the St. Mary's
court. Varsities play at 8 p.m.
after 6:30 p.m. jayvee action.
The Crusaders, again under
the helm of coach Bill McKib
bin, have seven lettermen on
the squad. They are Bob and
Dick Evans, Al Yates, Ron
Daley, Roger Hout, Terry
Cooper and Florian Shasky.
McKibbin has indicated
that both Evanses, Yates and
Hout may be starters tonight
along with either Jim Calhoun
or Andre Knutson.

It seems a pity that college
basketball fans will have to
wait until next March for a
possible scoring duel between
Cincinnati's Oscar Robertson
and Jerry Lucas of Ohio
State.
The top-rated Bearcats and
fourth-ranked Ohio State are
not scheduled to meet during
the regular season but they
could collide in the NCAA
tournament - if they win their
respective conference titles.
Meanwhile, Robertson and
j Lucas are expected to spend
their time battling it out for
the national scoring cham
pionship.
Robertson, who averaged
33.8 points a game while win
ning the scoring crown the
past two seasons, tossed in 36
. Monday night as the Bearcats
whipped Miami (Ohio), 89-58,
while Lucas contributed 26
points in Ohio State's 99-66
victory over Butler.
Continues Record Pace,
Although some observers
feel Robertson is so good he
has lost his desire for the col
legiate sport, he still has total
ed 124 points in the Bearcats'
first three games for a 41.3
point average. And if "Big O"
maintains that pace he could
erase the major college career
of 2,587 points before mid
terms next month.
Robertson started the new
season with a total of 1,962
points. The record he has his
sights on was set by Dick
Hemric-over a four-year span
at WBke Forest 1951-55.

HOLD IT. BUB! Miami University of Oxford, O., tried
slow-down tactics on the University of Cincinnati on the
Cincinnati floor last night and failed. Oscar Robertson, (12)
left, had 25 points the first half which was three more than
entire Miami team had. For the evening Oscar had 36 and
the Bearcats 89 for the victory over Redskins 58. Here Bob
Wisenhahn gets locked in with Dave Macks' grip on the

San Francisco - (UPD - The
boom is on for Ail-American
basketball candidates, even
before the shellack is dry on
the gym floors for the 1959-60
campaign. And, to hear the
coaches tell it, there is an Ail

and every basket.
Adolph Rupp of Kentucky
says his Bill Lickert should
make the first Ail-American
team this year, but probably
won't do any better than the
third team," says coach Bob

if Rupp says so, it probably

St. Mary's, defending coun

any exceptional height this
season. Tallest among the 14
listed is Burich at 6 feet - Vx
inch. Al Yates is 6 - V4 and
Shasky 6-V4. Rouhier is the
only other 6-footer. Yates is
the only man in the 6-foot
bracket among the probable
starters. Dick Evans, Hout
and Knutson are 5-10 each.
The game tonight is not the
only action for St. Mary's this
week. The Medford club goes
to Eagle Point on Friday. On
Saturday the four-school Jack
son County B league jamboree
will be on the St. Mary's floor.

Syracuse also received one
vote .for second, two for third
and one for fourth, falling
only eight points shy of the
maximum possible total of
350. Syracuse posted the third
highest point total ever re

Mississippi received three
first-place votes and finished
second with 285 points. Lou

Saturday with an overtime
victory. It was the Gaels'
third straight win. They
should make it four tonight.
Contests Monday night
found Seattle breezing to an
83-54 win over Hawaii and
Pepperdine, partially atoning
for early season disappoint
ments,' edging Kent State, 84
80 in Ohio.
Hawaii held the Chieftains'
high-rated Don Ogorek to just
10 points, but Dave Mills
picked up the. slack with 20
points and he and Ogorek
managed to control the
boards against the Islanders'
towering center, Ron Davis.
Frank Delauro meshed 17 for
the losers.
Pepperdine was rated a
darkhorse contender for
WCAC honors, but promptly
mystified its fans by getting
slaughtered by Loyola and
dropping three of its first four
contests. However, Monday
night the Waves showed some
of their predicted fire as Bob
by Sims- and Blue scored 24
and 20 respectively to offset a
hot 31-point night for the los
ers' Charley Boykin.
