New Vets Pension Law To Become Effective The new pension law effec tive next July 1 in no way changes the basic eligibility for a veteran seeking a pen sion, S. T. Brannock, contact representative, VA Domicili ary, Camp White, said today. The veteran still must be totally and permanently dis abled, not due to his own mis conduct, from causes. not traceable to his service, must have had 90 days or more of honorable wartime service, and an income below prescrib ed limits. Extending the present in come limits of $1,400 a year for a single veteran and S2,700 a year for a veteran with wife or child to $1,800 and $3,000 respectively, the new pension law attempts to relate the amount of pension to need, Brannock said. Receiving Pensions Veterans with higher in come will receive lower pen sion payments and those with smaller incomes will receive larger pensions when the law becomes effective. But the basic eligibility re quirements for veterans re mains unchanged, Brannock reiterated, in contrast to the requirements for veterans' widows and children. Widows of World War II and Korean conflict veterans under the new law no longer will be required to show that the deceased veteran had a service - connected disability. Like widows of World War I veterans, they will have to show only that the veteran had 90 days or more of honor able wartime service. Widows must also come within the in come limitations, Brannock stated. ; . MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. Our space scientists report that the cover ripped off 45 seconds after the launching. THE moral: LITTLE things are im portant. THE importance .of little things is dramatized by an ancient maxim whose author ship Is lost in the mists of an tiquity. It goes like this: "For lack of a nail, the shoe was iost; for lack of a shoe, the horse was lost; for lack of a horse, the rider was lost." In that form, it was used by Benjamin Franklin in a pre fix to his Poor Richard's Al manac. In an older form, it is put like this: "For lack of a nail, the shoe was lost; for lack of a shoe the horse was lost; for lack of a horse the rider was lost; for lack of the rider, a KINGDOM was lost." IN THAT form, it goes clear back to England's War of the Roses in which for 30 long and bloody and terrible years Eng land was torn by a dynastic struggle between the House of York, whose emblem was the white rose, and the house of Lancaster, whose emblem was the red rose. The War of the.Roses came to its final end in the battle of Bosworth Field, in which Richard in, the last king of the House of York, performed prodigies of valor, but at the critical moment of the battle, when his presence was needed everywhere, 'his horse was killed by an arrow. SHAKESPEARE, in his Rich ard the Third, tells the story thus: King Richard: A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse. C a t e s b y: Withdraw, my lord; I'll help you to a horse. King Richard: Slave! I have set my life upon a cast. And I will stand the hazard of the die. I think there be six Rich monds in the field; 'Five have I slain today, in stead of him A horse! A horse! My king dom for a horse. AT THIS moment, the Earl of Richmond, a supporter of the House of Lancaster, comes on the scene and they fight and Richmond kills Richard III -and that ends the royal tenure of the House of York. It wasn't the lack of a nail that finished Richard's horse. But the chance flight of an archer's arrow is a little thing -like the ripping off of the plastic cover of the payload of a rocket fired at the moon. So- Watch the little things.
