New Vets Pension Law To Become Effective
The new pension law effec
tive next July 1 in no way
changes the basic eligibility
for a veteran seeking a pen
sion, S. T. Brannock, contact
representative, VA Domicili
ary, Camp White, said today.
The veteran still must be
totally and permanently dis
abled, not due to his own mis
conduct, from causes. not
traceable to his service, must
have had 90 days or more of
honorable wartime service,
and an income below prescrib
ed limits.
Extending the present in
come limits of $1,400 a year
for a single veteran and S2,700
a year for a veteran with wife
or child to $1,800 and $3,000
respectively, the new pension
law attempts to relate the
amount of pension to need,
Brannock said.
Receiving Pensions
Veterans with higher in
come will receive lower pen
sion payments and those with
smaller incomes will receive
larger pensions when the law
becomes effective.
But the basic eligibility re
quirements for veterans re
mains unchanged, Brannock
reiterated, in contrast to the
requirements for veterans'
widows and children.
Widows of World War II
and Korean conflict veterans
under the new law no longer
will be required to show that
the deceased veteran had a
service - connected disability.
Like widows of World War I
veterans, they will have to
show only that the veteran
had 90 days or more of honor
able wartime service. Widows
must also come within the in
come limitations, Brannock
stated. ; .

In Cheerleader Meet
Phoenix - "The Tempest,"
of Southern Oregon college,
and the SOC cheerleaders will
be special guests at the Cheer
leaders' conference Saturday
at Phoenix High school.
The second annual work
shop is scheduled to enable
cheerleaders to exchange
ideas, skills, and yells.
This year's program is plan
ned with an all-day session
consisting of speakers, buzz
sessions, exchanging yells, en
tertainment and a luncheon
served by the Phoenix Pep
club. Cheerleaders from Cra
ter, Rogue River, Talent, Ea
gle Point, Ashland, Illinois
Valley, Medford, Henley,
Glendale and St. Mary's will
be present for the program.
Cheerleaders have been ask
ed to come dressed in their
favorite cheerleading outfits.
Samples of money making
items and books or pamphlets
useful to cheerleaders will be
displayed.
Registration will be from 9
to 9:20 a.m. Saturday.

Someone broke into Edith
and Henry's Drive-In, 1132
North Riverside ave., it was
discovered recently by city
police.
Henry Rudolph Byers, own
er of the building, said he had
not been in the building since
Nov. .20, so it could not be
determined at the present
time just when the building
was entered, police said.
The inside of the building
was disarranged, but it could
not be determined if anything
had been stolen,' Byers said.
Police said entry appeared to
have been made through the
rear window and exit was
made by the rear door.
