Sunday, No. 29, 195 MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdfori, Or. Patrick, Hanby Teachers Complete Evaluation Plan .7 Gold Hill - Gilbert Mack, principal of the Gold Hill schools, said teachers of Pat rick and Hanby schools of District 6C have been evalu ating their teaching person alities, techniques and skills during the past few weeks. The self-evaluation experience ancionmont wan eiven them to pin point teaching strengths and weaknesses. Each teacher has graded himself on some 40 points of Western Oregon Assessors Invite Groups to Meeting Main aim of the Western Oregon Assessors' association will be to determine livestock values for 1960, Ray Schu macher, association president, and Jackson county assessor, said Friday. t Schumacher said he had is sued invitations to approxi mately 15 farm organizations to send members to the meet ing scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 1 and 2 in Medford. y "There will be no discus sions on taxes," Schumacher said. "This meeting will be devoted to finding livestock market value averages .to be used by assessors west of the Cascades for I960." Reporting Said Problem Main problem in assessing livestock is reporting by the 'Farmers and ranchers, Schu macher said. Assessor's offices don't have enough men to check every farm and ranch to check on livestock values voluntarily reported by the farmers. "Last year we sent out ap praisers to all farms and ranches, however, farmer could have stock up in the foothills on range and the ap praiser might know nothing about it. It's also surprising how many dairy cows ' are classed as marginal producers. ,Very few are reported as good producers." To Explain Study The livestock, sales study which the assessors and their deputies will explain to the farmers covers horses, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep arid goats, poultry, swine and mis cellaneous items such as, bees, fox, mink, rabbits, kennel stock dogs, and chinchillas. One of the items which will probably be discussed is a resolution passed by the Ore gonJPoultry and Hatchery as sociation, which went on rec ord demanding a more realis tic valuation on hens and recommended to the assessor and state tax commission a suggested value, of 40 cents per bird. teaching qualities tat come under the following four head ings: personal and profession al qualities, school manage ment, organization and teach ing effectiveness. ' Some specific qualities and items evaluated under per sonal qualities are' health, ab sence from duties; personal appearance; participation in community life; sympathy and understanding of pupils and sense of humor. Professional Qualities Under professional qualities among other qualities evalu ated were loyalty to school system; professional interest and growth; receptiveness to suggestions and cooperation with principal, fellow teachers and parents. Effective use of materials; care of room and equipment; attitude toward assigned du ties; organization of class time and classroom control and discipline were items evaluated under school man agement and organization! Teaching effectiveness was evaluated.by considering such specific details' as lessqn plans, challenging students, mainte nance of high academic stand ards, pupil progress, individu al needs of pupils and general teacher influence on. pupils. Mack said that in addition to rating themselves on these points, each teacher selected six items or qualities that he felt quite strong in and gave reasons for his thinking. The teachers also selected four or more qualities that they con sidered themselves somewhat weak in and listed the plan they are now using or intend to use to strengthen weak qualities. Evaluation Completed This self-evaluation experi ence was completed' in ad vance of a "principal-teacher evaluation" to be given in the schools of District 6C, which includes Sams Valley, Gold Hill and Central Point. This principal-teacher evaluation is under the direction of Charles A.- Meyer, superintendent of District 6C. Mack said that teachers of the Patrick and Hanby schools stated that even though the s e 1 f- evaluation , assignment was' not an easy one, it had considerable value in calling attention to the many quali ties, personality traits, habits of thinking and attitudes needed to become a more ef fective teacher. Several stat ed that they especially thought working out a plan to overcome weaknesses was particularly beneficial. . In addition to this self-evaluation, the principal appoint ed a committee of teachers to work out an evaluation check sheet by which teachers will evaluate their principal. The goal of this teacher-principal evaluation is to bring about 1 administration that will most effectively help to build the best program possible for the benefit of the school children.
