A Sunday, Nov. 291959 Sharon Merkel Graduates From Nursing School News has been received here of the graduation Novem ber 22 of Miss Sharon Jean Merkel, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A. Erin Merkel, Chula Vista, Calif., from the Glen- dale Sanitarium and Hospital School ot Nursing, Glendale, Calif. The Merkels are former res idents of Medford" and Dr. Merkel was Jackson county health officer for many years. " He is now head of the depart- ment of pediatrics and mater- nal care for the San Diego , county department of public health. Miss MerkeL who took her .California State Board of Nursing examinations early this week, will ,be at "home with her parents at 93 K '.street, Chula Vista, until her marriage December 27 to Lio nel Eugene Rentschler. Dinner Given In Eagle Point Honors Parents ; Eagle Point Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Lusk, 305 C street, Eagle Point, were honored at a fam ily Thanksgiving dinner held recently at the Eagle Point Grange hall. Among the 36 persons at tending were five -of the couple's seven children, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. From out of town for the event were Mrs. Lillian Boehm, Redwood City, Calif., daughter; Mr. and Mrs. Her bert Lusk, Palo Alto, Calif., son and daughter-in-law, and their two sons, Ken and Lyle; and Mr. and-Mrs. Walter Ha- gen, Casper, Wyo., grand daughter,' and three children, Cindy, Wally and Sherri. Others included Mr. and Mrs.. Carl .Clough, v Jimmy Clough, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Clough, and children, Janice and Donna; Mr. and Mrs. J. Members of the Southern Oregon Society of Artists are sponsoring the event to assist in raising funds for a com munity art gallery. All works are priced under $25. Many paintings are on dis play, and in addition to the donated pictures, each ex hibitor has two others for sale at the, regular price. Twenty per cent of the price of these will also go to the fund. At the November session of the Woman's Society Tuesday, November 24, reports were made by delegates who at tended the Western Jurisdic tion meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service in Portland in October. Re porting were Mrs. Snow, Mrs. Walter Higgins, Mrs.. Jessie Minear and Mrs. George Rose- berry. Final plans were made for the Christmas Gift Festival being held in the church De cember 3 from 10 ajn, to 8 p.m. A special attraction this year will be Hungarian rolls to be served during the morn ing coffee time. These rolls are being made by Mr. and Mrs. Frances Czekli who came to Medford this summer from Hungary. Thanlcsgiying Dinner Given . Medford Duplicate Bridge club celebrated Thanksgiving with a covered-dish supper and a team-of-f our tourna ment. Twenty-one teams en tered the play, including five from Grants Pass. SAME PHONE SP 2-6526 4 Travelers Honored During Trip Eagle Point -Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dahack, Eagle Point, received a number of tributes while celebrating their golden weddmg anniversary with a group of friends in the Ha waiian Islands recently. Making the trip to Honolulu with the couple November 9 by United Airlines were Mrs. Dick Dugan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dahack, and Mrs. Ray Harnish, Eagle Point; Mrs. Eve Prentice, Medford; Mrs. Nettie Halter, Argo, Ore. The group motored to San Francisco November 8. While aboard, the airliner en route to Hawaii, Mr. and Mrs. Da hack were presented a decor ated anniversary cake. An anthurium bouquet had been placed in their rooms when they arrived at the Tropic Isle hotel on Waikiki beach, and each day brought a new gift for the couple. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Young, former valley residents who now operate a gift shop in Honolulu, and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Smith, son and daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, Eagle Point; escorted the group on a tour of Oahu island. The Dahacks were intro duced and honored at a local show and at the Waikiki Sands and Royal Hawaiian hotel where they dined. An other decorated cake was pre sented at the Cocoa Palms, and the Hawaiian Wedding Waltz was played. ; The group took a boat tour of Pearl Harbor on Armistice day and later toured coffee, banana arid pineapple planta tions on the islands. The vacationers spent two days on the island of Hawaii, where they watched eruptions of the volcano Kilauea Iki. They spent some time photo graphing the volcano during the day and late at night. Mr. Dahack was reported to have received singed eyebrows when he ventured too close. Mrs., Harnish said they were told by the guide that if the lava area is leveled over a period of 50 years, the moss will begin to grow in the area, followed by other vegetation and, finally, by trees.. The yisitors had luncheon at the Volcano House near the edge of the volcano; The house was vacated the next day due to the molten lava nearby. Journeys between islands were made by air. Gray, Cherry lane was elected pres ident of Rogue Valley Girl Scout council at the recent annual meeting held in Ash land. Mrs. Gray has been active in Girl Scouting for the past nine years. She has served as Brownie and Intermediate leader, troop committee mem ber, district public- relations representative, and third vice president. She has served as first vice president for the past two years. Mrs. Gray has also been an American Red Cross vol- Newly elected president of the Rogue Valley Girl Scout council is Mrs. Richard W. Mr. Ley has been a pioneer in the rocket field since 1920 and was one of the founders of German Rocket Society in 1927. He came to the United States in 1935 and has been science editor of a New York newspaper and research engi neer for Washington Institute of Technology.
