Disc Jockey T Face Showdown On 'Payola' New York (UPD-The man who popularized rock n' roll was to face a showdown with his TV employer today over whether money rather than art influenced his taste in music. ; ' Disc jockey Alan Freed, already fired from his radio job for refusing to sign a statement about "payola" was summoned to meet with "WNEW-TV- officials on busi ness practices of the Big Beat how. Jack Lynn, program man ager, and Bennet Korn, gen eral manager, said their sta tion is particularly interested in finding out how records are cnosen. lor mp snow, now performers are paid, and who winds up with the money. Freed. j Freed was fired from his WABC radio record show Saturday because he refused to sign a statement saying he did not take "payo'a," the word used to describe bribes paid to disc jockeys by com panies which want their re leases pushed. Freed said he never took paycla but would not sign the statement because he con ' sidered it an "insult" to his " "reputation for integrity.' Freed 'has been a teen-age idol for a number of years. He was believed to be the first disc jockey to have used , the term "rock 'n roll". Lee, speaking in New York Sunday, said the practice was clearly a case of -breaking the law. He said any station on which payola is allowed can lose its license. Billboard magazine, a lead ing spokesman for the music record industry, carried an ditorial in tms morning s edition which said payola was just one of many question able practices which should be banned in the industry. Billboard attacked the practice of promoting discs by giving free copies to deal ers who sell them at a re- rhiopd nrice and thus push their popularity. Billboard also charged that many com panies are buying their way onto record popularity charts.
