ROGUE RIVER Meeting Held by Club By MRS. MYRTLE WHIPPLE Rogue River - ine ogue River Hobby club met Mon day at the river home of Mrs. Alma Shontz on highway 99 south, with 10 members and one guest, Mrs. Richard Shontz, present. Members were served a turkey dinner by the hostess, Mrs. Shontz. In the afternoon gifts were exchanged, and a social hour , was held. j 'Mrs. Charles Larson and Mrs. Alfred Van Scoter are new members. Others "present were Mrs. Sam Bunch of Cave Junction, Mesdames Esther Shock, Harry Condray, Roy Larson, Rollin Stiehl, James Whipple, Verna Danley and the hostess, Alma Shontz. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Charles Lar son and will be the Christmas party with a covered dish din ner. Mrs. D. F. Barnett of Grants Pass fell at her home Friday ami broke her hie Mrs. Bar nett was taken to Josephine General hospitaL Mrs. Barnett was a former Rogue River resident when her hsuband, the Rev. D. F. Barnett was pastor of the church here. Both sawmills in Rogue River are shut down. The Magnolia mill which has been runnine for years has closed for an indefinite time. Work ers were notified by Superin tendent Howard Norwood Tuesday night. The stud mill is closed temporarily. It was reported that the city of Rogue River is going 'to have a jail. The jail will be located directly behind the ' citv hall on. land now occur pied by the unused Ground Observer tower. The new addition . to the R o g u e River elementary school should be ready for oc cupancy this week. Until this building is done the .children of different grades have only been going to school half days. , Rogue River will have a new form of amusement, '-'go-cart" racing. The track will be built on the Cameron Parr property on the Old Stage rd. within the city limits. Ed and Dick Montague, for mer loggers of Grants Pass, are the owners of the track. This is new in the United States, being only two years old. The nearest track is at Junction City 14 miles north of Eugene. Dr. Edward Chance return ed home last week from Chi cago, 111., where he has been taking post graduate work in arthritis and other degenera tive disease. Dr. Chance is an osteopathic physician and surgeon. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Ding ier and daughter, Mrs. Steve Mclnichuk, and baby of Port land were weekend visitors Fred Dingier and also his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Strahan. Mr. and Mrs. Chan Stokes of Lake Creek visited Mrs. Stokes' parents, the Dinglers, and sister. Mrs. Strahan, re cently. Lloyd Smith returned home last week from Post Falls, Idaho. While there, all his brothers and sisters came for their uncle, Bob Hollin's, fu neral. This is the first time all the Smiths had been together i for years. ' : Mr. and Mrs. Preston Nine they spent a week with their , son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Lynds, at Red-, mond, Ore. The Rogue River Garden club held open house Tuesday at the Live Oak Grange hall. The meeting opened at 10 a.m. with Mrs. A. C. Lewis of Medford giving a1 demon tration and lecture on dry ar rangements. A covered dish luncheon was served at noon. In the afternoon, Mrs. Robert i Nichols of Medford demon strated making Christmas wreaths and decorations. - Maritime Union Asks 70 Per Cent Increase New York-UP&-The Nation al Maritime Union, represent ing about 35,000 seamen out of East and Gulf Coast ports Thursday demanded a 10 per cent across the board wage increase. The seamen's demands were presented to representatives of the American Merchant Ma rine Institute, which bargains on behalf of, 38 passenger and cargo companies.
