WALZER UPI Financial Editor New York - (LTD - Here's a tip on tome 50-cent stocks -In fact, several thousands of them - the best "buys" in the nation. These shares are in 4,300 individual corporations. . But they are more than that. They are an investment in an edu cation program to make well informed citizens of the fu ture. Right now all over the na tion, approximately 70,000 teen-agers are forming these corporations - individual jun ior achievement companies. . They'll sell stock to their friends, neighbors and rela tives at SO cents a share (no one can buy more than five shares). The companies will go into action, manufacturing various products, doing a banking business, publishing or some other line which the company chooses. Some time next May, the companies will dissolve volun tarily, issue their corporation reports, declare dividends, if they made a profit, and pay back the capital originally in vested. Learning While Working Meantime, they will have learned the corporate setup of the nation the basis of the capitalistic system - and many other things, all good. Each company is expected to average 75 stockholders with $100 capitalization (200 shares). Each will gross $300 and show a net profit of $25 before "taxes," calculated as are federal income taxes but paid Into a local fund for the benefit of the Junior achievers themselves. They will pay 4 per cent dividend to stockholders. This is contingent on whether there was a profit, of course. In event of a loss the assets are prorated among the share holders. About 90" per cent of these enterprises will be manufac turing companies, producing and marketing a wide range of products, including jewel ry, toys, wallets, lamps, Christmas tree stands, barbe cue grills, snack tables, coast ers, memo pads, and dozens of others. Six Basic Materials Basic materials most fre quently used are wood, metal, plastics, paper, leather, and textiles. William H. Steinberg, Jr., public relations director of Junior Achievement, Inc., de fine junior achievement ' as "a nationwide educational or ganization which offers young people of high school age the opportunity to gain valuable and practical pre-business ex perience by organizing and operating their own small scale businesses with the gui dance of volunteer advisers from business and industry." These youngsters start out as novices and end their term as business people, capable of running a corporation, keep ing books, running the plant in manufacturing or another field, issuing an annual report that reveals payment o'( wages, rent, taxes, etc., de claring dividends, and finally liquidating the business. It's work, but it's also fun. There are problems and. head aches. Most companies make money. Some lose. In all cases the youngsters gain ex perience that's invaluable. They compete for the con sumer dollar with a good pro duct, reasonably priced to pro duce a small profit. Two-Stage Rocket Fired ii Virginia Washington-(tIP&-U.S. scien tists fired an experimental two-stage rocket to an alti tude of 160 miles at dawn to day but failed to create a second sodium vapor cloud for early-rising skywatchers on the Atlantic Coast. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched the Nike Asp rocket from its Wallops Island, Va., test station at 5:51 ajn. e.s.t. An NASA statement issued here said the sodium, design ed to vaporize and form a huge cloud, failed to eject from the pay load container. It said the cause of failure was not determined. A similar sodium rocket launched at dusk Wednesday night created a luminous va por cloud visible for hundreds of miles along the Atlantic coast.
