Wall Street Chatter New York (DPD Business men, investors and economists are reluctant to forecast earn ings beyond the near-term al though the underlying eco nomic picture is still strong and healthy, notes Hayden, Stone & Co. They realize that a lot de pends on whether ttie govern ment, backed by public opin ion,' can prevent a second steel strike at the end of the 80-day cooling off period, the firm points out. However, it adds, this cau tious attitude has provided an element of internal' market strength for the past several years and is primarily respon sible for the market's ultra selective status at this time. Home Furnishings daily cites' persistent reports that Higbee Co. is up for sale and that Associated Dry Goods Corp. and Federated Depart ment Stores have been men tioned as interested in the Cleveland department store. . ". . , Tax loss selling offers the prospect that many oil is suses will be oversold at year end," notes Oil Statistics Co., Inc. The firm points out that better-informed buying in oil shares is being noted in the street and that this should help form a -strong base for an early 1960 rally. (UPI Telephoto) New Threat Brings Fear off 'Mad EBomber' on Loose in NY , New York -(DPB- A normally quiet neighborhood on Staten Island was clutched by fear today. Housewives were afraid to go outdoors. . Car owners approached garage doors with terror. The death of Mrs. Concetta Giarletta, 41, by a grenade booby trap under . a . garage door and the warning to another housewife that "you will be next" spread panic in the Port Richmond district of the island. Was another "mad bomber"; on the loose? New York City had been plagued for 17 years by George Metesky, the original mad bomber, who setVoff 32 homemade bombs which in jured 15 persons during his career. He was captured in 1957 and sent to a home for the criminal insane. When Mrs. Giarletta got out of her husband's car in front of their garage Tuesday night with the offer to open the door, the neighborhood had been a modest, quiet one where most residents had owned their own homes for more than 10 years. The blast from a planted hand grenade, triggered as she raised the overhead door, tore off her legs and slashed at her- body. ; She received more than 50 wounds. Mrs. Giarletta died Thursday. Police reported Thursday they had assigned a guard to the home of Mr.: and Mrs. Charles Trachta "because a rough voice on the telephone had said: "Your garage is next." '" Find No Motive . Mrs. Trachta was nearly hysterical. So were many not so threatened. More than 50 residents asked police to search their garages. Others were afraid to put their cars away and autos stood at the curbs throughout the area. Detectives found no motive for the Giarletta bombing or fore the Trachta threat. Ef forts to trace the grenade frag ments found by the Giarletta garage have been fruitless. In stitutions were being checked for the escape or release of a possible mad bomber. Police saiii the call to the Trachta home could have been a cruel hoax. But the coroner's verdict on Mrs. Giarletta was starkly real. . "Death due to an explo sion," it read. ' Crystal River, Fla.
