Mayo Cllnto l Or. Alvares Lifetime Sludieg of Children And Adults One of the unfortunate fea tures of medicine, which al ways has bothered me, is that usually a con sulting physi cian sees a pa tient for only an hour or two out of his or her long life. It is hard, then, for him to learn much about the in fluences which- produced the illness. Worse yet, rarely can he learn anything of what Y ppened to the patient after he or she went home. Was there recovery or was there much more illness? Because of his type of practice, the consultant tends to look on the set of symptoms he hap pened to study as an isolated illness, when perhaps the symptoms represented just one episode in a disease which started in childhood and end ed with the patient's death in his 60s or 70s. Another question that al ways has intrigued me is: Why does mental strain upset different people in different days? One man, when things go badly, can get a bleeding ulcer. Another, with the same type of strain, can get an ul cerative colitis; another, sick headaches; another, a high) blood pressure; another, an eczema; and another asthma! These different reactions to stress seem to be due to some basic hereditary and inborn peculiarity of the individual Perhaps they are due to some pecularity in the way in which his nervous system or his glands of internal secre tion react. Perhaps these re actions will rup true to type for" the person's lifetime. Many Persons Studied At the Fels Research Insti ture, on the campus of Anti- och College, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, Dr. L. W. Son tag, Dr. John Lacey, Dr. Mar vin Armstrong, and other members of the staff, in seek ing answers to these prob lems, are studying many per. sons from infancy onward, They began this work in 1929; Whenever possible, the doc tors start with a woman when she is pregnant. They study her, her brothers and sisters, her husband and any children she may already have. When her child is born, they start studying him, and they keep checking up on him year after year. One thing already learned is that the several parts of the body, including the nervous system and the heart, react to stress and excitement in dif ferent ways ways which are characteristic for the indivi dual and which remain un changed throughout his life, TELEVISION PROGRAMS The following TV broadcast log is printed as a free public service for the Mail Tribune's readers and TV viewers. Bids Called for Fairground Pavilion Grants Pass - Bids for plumbing, heating, electrical and general contractors for construction of the Josephine County Fair pavilion have been invited by the Josephine county fair board. Plans for the 14,000-square foot building have been com pleted by Architect Robert F. Fisher and bids are' to be opened at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at the fairgrounds. The building will include five convertible exhibit-meet ing spaces, a stage, kitchen. demonstration and: dressing areas and an office. Pre-qualification forms are to be filled out and submitted to the fair board, in care of Robert F. Fisher, AIA archi tect, Grants Pass, before noon Monday, Nov. 23. A. proposed atom smasher would be two miles long and eight times more . powerful than any now in existence. These studies must eventually shed great light on the reasons why some persons go through life with strength and comfort and certainty, while others fail physically or mentally, Some get mixed-up emotional- ly, and, as a result, may de velop, one or more diseases This is the sort of study which delights me. The con clusions that will one day emerge from the mass of facts, now being gathered and analyzed, must eventually help us physicians, and every one concerned with the health of this nation, to understand the growth and development of the body and mind, from the hour of birth to the day of death. - Shop ft Save at The ' SHOE MART Your Family Shae Store MEDFORD'S OUTLET SHOE STORE SHOES for all the family . 525 Crater Lake Ave. SP 3-4886 : Electrical Wiring ft Repair industrial Commercial Residential Call Jack Henbest ROGUE ELEC.
