There'll be lots more cheers for Oates, for he has two seasons more of eligibil ity, but he'll never hear them. 2nd Franchise In LA Depends Upon O'Malley New York-ttJPD - The ques tion whether Los Angeles will have a second major league baseball franchise apparently boils down to this: Will Dodg er President Walter O'Malley share his gold mine? Stanley Brown, president of the would-be Los' Angeles Stars, said Wednesday -after conferring with Continental league officials, that Los An geles may have another fran chise "if Mr. O'Malley is willing." In Los Angeles, '0',Malley Commented, "no, comment." Brown said he was advised by Continental league presi dent Branch Richey that the new circuit would be happy to consider Los Angeles "con ditional upon Mr. O'Malley's not being in opposition." Asniand A well proven defensive team and a surpris ing passing attack will be dis played Saturday on Fuller field when Southern Oregon college plays host to Eastern Washington college at 8 p.m Only three touchdowns can be charged to the Raider de fensive team in the past ftfur games while the - offensive unit has eiven ud two on a fumble and pass interception. Led bv the . only senior member of the unit, Dick (Hughie) Smith, the Raiders have held opponents to. a scant 59.6 yards passing and 102.1 yards rushing per game. Smith leads the big middle three and his hard charging has resulted in one touchdown for SOC and recovered fum bles not to mention the plays that have been stopped before they could barely get started. Dave Brown and Neil Green along with Pedro Colley make up the bulk of the middle line but defensive ends, John Shama and Larry Drake, take responsibility for turning the outside plays in so the big boys can put the stoppers on. Shama and Drake solved one of tne Kaiaers Diggesi problems in the beginning of the season.. At first every team the men of SOC met ran them ragged around the flanks. Since then the work of Drake- and Shama have turned the tables in favor of Southern Oregon. Phil Sword, Willie Garner, John Buck and Jess Munyon at their linebacker positions have been responsible for the short passes and helping out the forward wal1. John Harvey, Clark Peter son, Doyle Bransom, Kerm Bennett, and now sidelined Wayne Allen have taken over the respont ibilities in the backfield. Their play has ac counted for 10 pass intercep tions. In addition, opponents have completed only 4.4 pass es per game for a total of 31. Thus 25 per cent of enemy completions have been match ed by SOC interceptions. , Raider coach Al Akins points not only to this season but also to the future. Nine of the mentioned defensive players are freshmen, four are sophomores, and only two, Smith an'i Sword, are seniors. Offensively the Raiders will go with Eldon Francis, Bran som, and Al (the Horse) Barnes in the backfield with Jack Brown at quarterback. Brown and Lance Locke made the passing attack work the best it has this season last week when they completed three for touchdowns to Gor dy Carrigan. Carrigan and his wing part ner, Jim McAbee can give 46 w reasons, tne passes oi crown and Locke have been success ful. Carrigan has caught 27 passes for 424 yards and Mc Abee has gathered in 19 for 196 yards. Eastern Washington, on the other hand, has been having trouble getting in the scoring column. The Savages have tallied "only, 9.7 points per game while opponents have scored 22.1. ' EWC's .lone win in seven starts came over Western Washington ,1614. On one occasion they, have tied and that was in the EWC home coming game as they played College of Puget Sound to a 13-13 standoff. College "of Idaho, Pacific Lutheran, Central Washing ton, and Whitworth all have registered wins over the luck less Savages. Even Puget Sound has a win over them but it was on September 26 in the. first game of the season. McLoughlin and Hedrick ninth grade gridders wrap 'up their campaigns in their an nual crosstown rivalry. The game will be at 1 p.m. at the senior high stadium. The fact that both clubs are undefeated this season adds significance to the conflict al though there is no official southern Oregon mantle, mythical title can be claimed by the winner. The Hornets of Hedrick and the Bulldogs of McLoughlin reportedly are buzzing and barking, respectively, for ac tion. Said Barney Riggs, head coach at Hedrickj "The kids are real eager and are show ing a lot of desire for the game."
