CONTROL FOREST FIRE Gatlinburg, TennDPB-Fire fighters with the help of rain today had a forest fire in the Great Smoky Mountains Na tional Park under control. 'Park rangers said the fire had destroyed over a 50 acre area since Wednesday night. They were unable to explain how it started. In the Day's N By FRANK JENKINS Politics today. , It might be a welcome change after an avalanche of quiz show news. Anyway 1 Yesterday was the first Tuesday after the first Mon day in November and the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November is tra ditional -election day in the U.S.A1 In countries that are so fortunate as to have FREE elections, election day is an important event; It should perhaps be added that in our country the elec tion days that fall in odd-numbered years are not particu larly exciting. ... IN KENTUCKY, a Democrat wins over a Republican for the office of governor in spite of hopeful thoughts by the GOP that it might win a vic tory there. Kentucky, although classed as a border state, is still traditionally-Southern and Dem ocrat. When a Republican wins there, it's man-bites-dog news, and as such worth head- EX-TOBACCO MAN DIES New York (UPD Sidney Smith Whelan, 71, a former tobacco executive, died Thursday. - f lines. This year the man didn't bite the dog. IN UTAH, former Republican Governor J. -Bracken Lee (who is a controversial polit ical character) runs for mayor of Salt Lake City as an inde pendent candidate and wins over the Republican and Dem ocratic candidates. The Republicans claim gains in municipal elections in the smaller cities of Ohio and New York. In Indiana, as an offset, the Democrats win all bu one of the mayoral elec tions in the. state's 25 largest cities. IN BOSTON, two Democrats were running for mayor., The Democrat endorsed by Senator John F. Kennedy who is an outstanding candi date for the Democratic nomi nation for President TOOK A BEATING. It might have been happen stance. It MIGHT have been a slap at Kennedy. . . ' , THAT brings us .around to Mr. Harold Stassen, whose candidacy for mayor of Phila delphia was, generally regard ed as a test of whether he's still a political figure or only a has-been. ' Apparently, he's a has-been. Anyway, he took a decisive J MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. C beating. Friday, Nov. 6, 1959 That probably . cooks his goose. WHAT'S wrong with Stas sen? I think everyone who saw him in action at the GOP con vention in San Francisco will know what's wrong with him. He made an all-out foray against the nomination of Richard Nixon as vice-Presi-dent. ' He lost horse and foot. ' As a personal courtesy, he "was given 'three minutes to make a statement. In his state ment, he could have snatched a PERSONAL victory from the jaws of defeat. He could have grinned, shrugged his shoulders, waved his hand in a gesture of good sportsman ship, said a few laughing words and 'sat down in the burst of applause that always greets a graceful loser. ' He didn't. Instead, he took 15 minutes of a busy convention's time to give an AWFUL exhibition of poor sportsmanship. That about tells the tale.
