o .Thursday. Oct. 29, 1959 Heart Condition Duplicated to Relieve Pain Philadelphia -(Science Ser vice) - The heart condition that causes "blue babies" is being duplicated in adults to relieve heart pain, a Minnea polis surgeon said here to day. , The new operation is based on the observation that "blue babies" have a very rich cor onary blood supply, Dr. Sta- cey B. Day, University of Minnesota, explained at the meeting of the American Heart association here. Now, Dr. Day and his co-workers have attempted to duplicate this condition in adult hearts, although not to . the extent that the patient will be harm ed or turn bluish. . Blue babies are born with a combination of heart and cir culatory defects that prevents their blood from receiving enough oxygen. Such blood tends to be bluish and gives a blue cast to the skin. Appar ently the highly developed coronary blood supply seen in these children is utilized by the body to keep the heart working efficiently despite its inborn defects. The severe pain that oc curs in coronary artery disease however, does not mean that the blood lacks oxygen as such, but rather, that not en ough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart muscle be cause of a narrowing or shut down of part of its blood ves sel system. Dr. Day and his associates decided to try to exploit the body's compensa tory mechanisms, as reflected in the blue babies' hearts, by bringing some "blue," venous, blood almost directly into the heart muscle. They tapped the pulmonary artery, through which de- oxygenated or venous blood returns from the right side of the heart to the " lungs for fresh oxygen. Openings in this artery and in the left side of the heart wera- joined to provide a route for a small amount of venous blood. The researchers believe this oxygen-poor blood, by raising the carbon dioxide content of the blood in the coronary ar teries, should stimulate the non-diseased branches of the coronary network to enlarge. I It should also spur the growth ' of new "collateral" blood ves ; sels within the heart. - The re ; suit, they hope, will be that 1 both toe amount and distribu- - tion of the total blood flow ; through the - ailing muscle ; will improve. The operation has been per- formed on three adults so far. J Each patient had suffered se- 2 vere heart pain. In each case, - there was a dramatic and sua tained pain relief, improve ment in health, and early re- turn to gainful employment s after the operation, the sur i geon reported. Dr. Day stress i ed that only patients whose ; heart pain is due to narrowed coronary arteries, as estab ? lished by careful examination and x-ray" studies, were can- - didates for operation. Salad Oil Said Good for Babies Kansas City, Mo. -(Science Service) -Mothers might do better bathing their babies with salad oil or shortening than with certain . baby lo tions. , , Many lotions contain 95 per cent water, resulting in quick drying and little benefit to the skin, a dermatologist : has reported in the October issue of GP . magazine, pub lished here by the American Academy of General practice. Dr. Seymour L. Hanfling of East Orange, N. J., also at tempted to clear up some skin-care fallacies. Detergents, he said, are not more irritat ing than soaps. It is just that women forget that they are more effective and hence use too much. Machine-laundered diapers can be just as safe for the baby as those that are hand washed, he said. Also, babies do not need daily baths," be cause they have little -oil se cretion and never develop body odor. Except during hot weather, two baths a week are adequate, he said. Petroleum- preparations, such as -mineral oils, can not possibly nourish the skin.". Instead,' be said, these preparations have a protective function similar to that of protective creams. "T" J Few high - water lotions have animal of vegetable oils that can be absorbed through the skin. The use of "any edi ble fat on the skin results in some useful replenishment of the skin, oils,'-. Some of the best, Dr. Hanfling said, are hydrous' lanolin" fee various salad oils,, and the hydrogen ated shortenings.
