ALCOHOL AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE Some people want to know whether drinking a bottle of beer or a couple of cocktails with dinner will make then high blood pressure much worse. I doubt it. Some of my friends who are specialists in diseases of blood vessels say that, seeing that alcohol can somewhat lower blood pressure, a moderate amount of it, especially beore dinner, is a good idea. They even rec ommend it. A while ago I was much amused when I told this to a man of 50 who loved two highballs before dinner. Eagerly, he asked, "Doctor, will you put that in writing?" I asked "Why?" He said because his wife was a temperance lec turer. Unfortunately for his aspirations, his wife looked on my certificate with a jaun diced eye. She accused her husband and me of collusion; also, she promptly fired me, and got another doctor who would agree with her! . Dr. Alvarez' booklet on blood pressure may be obtain ed by sending 25 cents and a large, stamped, self-addressed envelope with your re quest to Dr. Walter C. Al varez, Dept. A Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1959 Deadline Set for Filing Protests Washington -4DPD- The Fed eral Power commission has set a deadline of Dec. 4 for persons desiring to protest an application for construction of a $178 million private power project in Idaho and Oregon. The application was sub mitted by Pacific Northwest Power company of Portland, Ore., for a license to build the proposed high Mountain Sheep development of the Snake and Imnaha rivers in Adams county, Idaho, and Wallowa county, Ore. Pacific Northwest first filed the petition March 31, 1958. It was later amended Feb. 27 and against Sept. 28, 1959. The commission denied an application by Pacific North west in January, 1958, for a proposed hydroelectric proj ect in the same area consist ing of two dams. The current application calls for a single 690-foot dam on the Snake river in Idaho and Oregon that would form a reservoir 58 miles up stream to the low Hells Can yon development of Idaho Power company.
