And. so the church will be, complete with skiing priests and skiing ministers, when the . VTII Olympic Winter games are staged here at Squaw Valley Feb. 18-28. With some 35,000 daily spectators and more than 800 athletes from 34 countries an ticipated for. the 1960 games, the need for places of worship is apparent. For this reason, the Roman Catholic church and 11 major Protestant denominations are constructing two streamlined buildings. Both are being built on private land as per manent structures. Catholic Structure . The Catholic church, of an A-frame design typical in snow country, will be known as Queen of the Snows churchy while the Protestants will call theirs the United Church of Squaw Valley. The latter is unique with its "floating" roof and all-glass walls. Heading these respective undertakings are the Rev. Patrick J. O'Neill, Truckee, Calif., and Dr. William David Pratt, San Francisco, superin-; tendent of the Northern Cali fornia Congregational confer ence.' Both leaders make clear that the resident priest and minister . to be selected for their respective churches must be skiers. "He's got to talk the skier's language," Dr. Pratt states. : The Rev. Mr. O'Neill says that skiing priests-of which he hopes to have 10 or more for the Games-will be avail able should their services be needed. "We'll try to have at least two on the hills during all ski hours," he adds. Languages The - language problem hasn't been overlooked by the churches either. Dr. Pratt says that efforts are being made to contact the ological students and minis ters of the foreign teams to Med ford Mail Tribune help conduct services.. In any event, multi-lingual priests and ministers are expected to be on hand. Dr. Pratt hopes that the "converse" wing of the United Church of Squaw Valley will provide a place for "purpose ful conversation" for athletes and future winter sports en thusiasts who - might visit Squaw Valley. Hourly Mass c During the Games, Roman Catholic masses will be cele brated hourly from. 6 ajn. until noon Sunday and there will be a daily weekday mass. There' also will be four masses each at Truckee, Tahoe City and Kings . Beach on the. two Sundays during the Games. . Three services will be con ducted Sundays in the Prot estant church, in addition to weekday programs. Sunday services probably will be held at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. .:. ; The American Bible assd ciation will provide Bibles printed in languages of the various countries. The Queen of the Snows Chapel is located on a sloping site northeast of the Ice Arena. The A-frame chalet style building will seat 372 and will . cost $125,000. The structure was designed by J. Clarence Falciano, Santa Rosa, Calif., architect. The steep-roofed building is designed to shed snow and at the same time provide the ec clesiastical atmosphere with its loftiness. A simple wood slab is the design for the altar, supported by Olympic rings and Greek letters symbolizing the word Christ.; Floating Roof The Protestant church - a white , slated concrete shell, lending the effect of a snow covered mountainside, will "float" on all glass walls. Costing $140,000 and witj a seating capacity, of .150, this ultra-modern edifice has walls of stained glass to reduce the sun's glare. A 60-foot, three dimensional cross of sculptured aluminum will stand before, the church." Designers of this building are 'John Lipscomb, George Killam and Richard Whitaker, associated with architects Ulysses Barbachano,,' ' Oleg Ivanitsky and Roy Watanabe of El Cerrito, Calif. ' The United Church of Christ was . given the responsibility for providing worship facili ties at Squaw Valley by an allocation of the northern California Nevada Council of Churches. Ministers of all participating denomiriat ions will be invited, . however, to share the ministry. . Opening Pageantry . One of the most impressive church ceremonies will occur during the Games' opening day pageantry. It will be the colorful "Blessing of the Skis," conducted in the 8,500 seat, $3,500,000 Olympie arena. - . r This Is where St.;Ullr,-the patron saint of . skiers .is hon ored.
