Watkins Sea Gulls Have Learned How lo Open Scallop's Shell In comparison with the oyster or other easily procur able shellfish, the scallop has a comparatively fragile shell. It serves its owner very well as an easily moved abode; affords protection of a kind from many enemies. The great numbers of these mollusks, their easily discern ible shapes from the air and the fragility of their shells, however, make them easy prey for roving hungry gulls. Somewhere along the evolu tion of instinct, some gull, wiser than his fish - eating neighbors, discovered the theory of impact to open shells in order to eat the en closed flesh. Gulls Frustrated I often try to visualize the frustration of the early sea gulls as they cock their heads from side to side and conjec ture a means of securing these treasures, which their olfac tory senses told them was food. They must have tossed the shells in the air many times, vainly trying to break down the citadel. Perhaps that early gull, exasperated by the protecting shell, violently and in a fit of angry emotion, cast the bivalve forcefully from him where a stone accidental ly shattered the structure and laid bare the live flesh. As he gobbled up the ten der morsel, he undoubtedly associated the procuring of the meat with the hard object which made possible the breaking of the shell. Either he, or others who observed the miracle, tried again, with the same result. The shell could be opened. Some time later these birds began carrying the mollusks aloft, dropping them upon hard objects on the ground, swooping down and feasting on the exposed flesh. Precise Accuracy Many generations of sea gulls have acquired a precise accuracy in dropping these shells upon rocks or hard ob jects along the coasts, but the modern gull of today has uti lized the wide expanse of ce ment pavements for his bomb ing range. It is a very enlightening in stinct that associated the long, hard strip of man-made ce ment, with the rock of former times, that today's sea gull uses to secure a delicacy. Could it be possible that Small, Crowded Areas Said Hit Hardest by Polio Washington -(UPD- A gov ernment survey shows that polio this year hit hardest in small, crowded areas among poorer groups and the non white population. The survey, made public by Surgeon General Leroy E. Burney also noted that chil dren under five years old were the principal vicitims both this summer and last. The' preliminary data- was collected by the communica ble disease center of the pub lic health service. Burney said the pattern this year showed "a marked shift" from the pre-Salk vac cine days when the disease spread over wide areas and among all economic and popu lation groups. Non-White Groups Higher A total of 4,245 paralytic type cases occurred between Jan. 1 and Oct. 9 this year. This was at a rate of 1.8 cases per 100,000 population. Burney said that among the white population the rate was 1.4 per 100,000 while in non white groups the rate was 3.2. He also reported that 37.6 per cent of the cases this year occurred among children un der five and of this group, over naif have never been vaccinated. Another 23.1 per cent of the total occurred among five to nine year olds while 30.1 per cent occurred among teen agers and persons in their twenties. Burney placed the number of fully vaccinated persons at around 68 million but noted that 36 million of the vulner able under 40 group had no Salk shots at all. The study showed that ma jor epidemics occurred this year in Des Moines, Kansas City, and Little Rock. The at tack rates in those three com munities was more than IS per 100,000 population. Burney said there were moderate epidemics in 20 oth er communities and small, highly concentrated outbreaks in 19 others. Ashland Man Is Arraigned in Court Ashland Raymond Del phus Cook, 746 C st., Ash land, was arraigned in jus tice court Wednesday on a charge of assault and battery. Trial was set for Nov. 10. Cook was arrested by Ash land and Oregon state police Tuesday evening on an Ash land justice court warrant fol lowing a complaint signed by his wife. He was lodged in the county jail overnight in lieu of $500 bail.
