Thursday, Oct. 22, 1959 Sockets To Check Wind, Radiation , .Washington (Science Serv ice) - The U.S. is scheduled to fire ten rockets during the week of Nov. 16-22 as its con tributionto International Rocket Week. . None of the rocket3 are to place payloads in orbit. Rath er they will probe the rim of space, then fall back to earth. They will measure up per ' atmosphere winds 150 miles high, solar X-ray and Lyrhan-alpha emissions, wa ter' vapor in 18- to 60-mile-high air, charge densities be tween 50 and 1,000 miles that affect t a d i o transmission, magnetic fields and microme teorites. A special attempt vJlL be made to record with high resolution part of the so lar spectrum. Tne firings will be part of th ' research' program of the International Geophysical Co- e operation-1959, the program hat succeeded the Interna tional Geophysical Year. Cooperating will be the Na tional Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Army Ballistic. Research Laborato- rie&atbe Air Force Geophysics Research Directorate, the Na--vajt, . CLYDE KELL Gold Hill - A special "get acquainted" coffee will be sponsored by the Gold Hill Parent-Teacher association to raise funds for this year's budget, Mrs. Jerry Herring ton, ways and means chair man reported. The event will be held at the home of Mrs. Paul Molloy, on Second ave., between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17. Snacks and coffee or tea will be served through out the day, and lunch at noon. Members of the committee suggested that all parents of children who attend Patrick and Hanby schools, as well as newcomers to the commu nity, attend the event. M r s. Leonard McMahan was hostess at her home on Sardine creek Thursday, for a combination farewell and get acquainted party. Mrs. Kenneth Fluck assisted. Those honored were Mrs. Harold Hocker, who planned to leave this week with her husband and four children, Mary, Cindy, Sheryl, and Ga ry, for Detroit, Mich., where they will make their home, and four women who are re cent newcomers to Sardine Creek, Mrs. O. T. Powers, Mrs. Glen Stewart, Mrs. Ed Fargo, and Mrs. H. Shinn. Mrs. Hocker was presented souvenirs of the area and Oregon, which also included a map of Sardine Creek, made by Mrs. Ogden Kellogg. Besides the women honored, others attending were Mrs. Clarence Parsley, Mrs. George Smith, Mrs. Ivan Smith, Mrs. Henry Paulson, Mrs. Jerry Jeroloman, Mrs. Walter Whit ney, Mrs. Georgia Wilson, Mrs. Mack McKibben, Mrs. Ivan Governor, Mrs. Bob Gray, Mrs. Sidney Anderson, Mrs. Thelbert Wright, Mrs. W. S. Dickinson, Mrs. Robert Suth erland, Mrs. Nora Wait, Mrs. Ogden Kellogg, -Mrs. McMa han, and son, Jeff, Mrs. Fluck, and Robin, all of this area, and Mrs. Georgia Lee, and Steve Jenkins of Harbor City, Calif. While in Washington, the Smiths went to Vancouver where they were guests of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Boosliter. She is the former Alice Smith. Returning to- Oregon they visited in Corvallis at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Doug las Smith, and at Coos Bay with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Petty, and children. George Goodman , of the First Methodist church of Medford was guest speaker at the Gold Hill Community Methodist church Sunday, Oct. 18, where he presented the Laymen's Day message. Others participating in the worship services were Glenn Bowen, who was in charge of the program, Ogden Kel logg and the Rev. O. L. Ken dall, a retired minister, who is a recent newcomer to this area. Mrs. Clarence Parsley was hostess at her home for a meeting of Amethyst Rebekah Friendship club Monday, Oct. 19. Mrs. Harry Quinn, presi dent, conducted the business session. Plans were made to par ticipate in the annual Teach ers' Halloween party set for Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the IOOF hall. Those named to take part in the entertain ment which will be presented by the club were Mrs. Pars ley, Mrs. Donald Morrow, Mrs. Paul Molloy, Mrs. Delos Walker, and Mrs. Howard Burnette. The Nov. 16 meeting of the group will be held at the home of Mrs. Paul Molloy. An organizational meeting was held Monday in the Cen tral Point Elementary school music room to organize a Dis trict 6C mother-singers group. Mrs. Harry Field will direct the group, which is being pro moted to give those who like to sing the' opportunity to sing for the fun of singing. Mrs. Field said all women of the Sams Valley and Gold Hill areas are invited to join the group. Arrangements were made to hold the singing sessions during morning hours instead of after school as previously planned. Women interested should telephone Mrs. Harvey Field, NOrmandy 4-2204 for' additional details. Child care will be proivded for ore-school youngsters whose mothers attend.
