MYRTLE WHIPPLE iicue River - The fire de partment was called recently to ttie home -of Mr. and Mrs. Davis near the mouth of Ev ans creek. Only slight dam age resulted by smoke and water. The fire started in the attic and may have been paused by faulty wiring, fire men said. Word has been received here by friends of the death of Mrs. Angie Wilcox of Coos Bay. Mrs. Wilcox died Sept. 24 and was 90 years old. Many years ago Mrs. Wilcox ran the hotel which used to stand on the corner of Oak and Main streets. It is the present Linden - (Red) Hatch property. - Mesdames Claire Douglas, Lloyd Smith, William White, Jerusha Moore, Henry Bon ney, Esther Shock, Harry Condray, James Whipple, Roy Larson," Hazel Hanley, Sam Bellah, Paul Hughes, Earl Brooks, Cameron Parr, Ruth Brooks and Beryl Engle were among those of the Rogue River and Laurel Garden clubs who attended the Siski you district convention in Medford Wednesday. The Laurel Garden club met Wednesday, Oct. 7 with Mrs. Greta Sameson, Sophia and Louise Thiesen as hostess es at their home on Highway 99, south. ' Seventeen members and two guests were present. The guests were Mrs. Edgar Ad ams and Mrs. Fred Hoen, Mrs. Hoen became a member of the club. Refreshments were served. Meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Henry Bonney. Mrs. Victor Friden- chap led in prayer and the sa lute to the flag was led by Mrs. William White. Roll call was answered by garden tips or questions. Business discussed included reading of the minutes by Mrs. White; and secretary treasurer's report by Mrs. Fri den. Mrs. Myrtle Whipple was appointed news reporter for the club. 1 The club will hold a card party Oct. 30 at the Civic club rooms. A small sum will en title one to play cards and have refreshment;. The rooms were decorated wtih bouquets of fall flowers. The next meet ing wUl be Nov. 4. . The Rogue River Dairy club held its first meeting of the new year at the home of Da vid Carter Oct. 10. Business included election of officers and plans for Achievement night. Word has been received of the death Sept. 20 at Las Ve gas of Mrs. Winnie Horner, a ftrmer Rogue River resident. Mrs. Horner was the original wner of the Shangri La mo fctl on Highway 99, north. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Elledge re parents of a girl born Oct. Vteighing 8 pounds, 2 ounc 4b. She has been named Julie fee. A. card as been received fftm Richard (Andy) Ander son stating he was enjoying a trip to Sweden but was about ready to return to his home in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Ander son is a former Rogue River resident. The congregation of the Hope Presbyterian church held its first services in the new church Sunday. The Rev. D. F. Barnett, a former pas tor, was the speaker. A pot- luck dinner was held in the new dining room. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Golding, Effie Badley. Edith Osborne, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Smith have been visiting the differ ent Grange Booster night meetings. They visited tne Sams Valley. Gold Hill and Enterprise Granges. On Tues day Mrs. Golding and Mrs. Smith attended HEC meeting at Butte Falls. They al so went to Gettysburg. Wash ington, D.C., and New York. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Drake re turned to their home in Santa Monica, Calif., having been called here by the death of William Trotter. Mrs. Drake is Mrs. Trotter's sister. Richard Niquette, Rogue River grocer, last week pur chased two more properties He purchased the old Presby terian church on Pine St. and the post office building and lot at the corner of Main and Depot sts. No definite plans have been made on what he will do with the properties but is considering remodeling the church into an apartment house and may build a new post office. Grange News... Central Point Grange The annual Grange Booster night will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, with a potluck din ner at 7 p.m. The lecturer, Mrs. Gaston Floux, has arranged a pro gram, and the evening will finish with square, dancing. Each Grange family is asked to bring a friend; food, and table service. The HEC is hold ing a rum mage, white elephant and plant sale in the Grange hall on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During a meeting of the Grange Friday, the third and fourth degrees were given to Mr. and Mrs. Phil McCormick and Mrs. Sidener of Central Point and Mrs. Neil Dusen berry of Shady Cove Grang. Cocaptains of the team were Mrs. Floux and Edwin Geb hafd. Tickets for the smorgasbord dinner to be given 'by the Grange on Nov. 14 were dis tributed to the members for advance sale. Charles More house is ticket chairman. Visiting Grangers present for the meeting Were Mr. and Mrs. Dee Hendrickson of Phoenix Grange, Mrs. Betty Dusenberry and Neil Dusen berry of Shady Cove Grange. On the serving committee for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Weidman and Mr. and Mrs. Don Bohnert. Oct. 28 the HEC will meet at the home of Mrs. Ed Lull on the Old Stage Rd., for a 1:30 p.m. dessert. Griffin Creek Griffin Creek Grange has invited residents of the Grif fin Creek area to attend the annual open meeting Thurs day, Oct. 22, at 8 pjn. There will be a program of music and games and refresh ments will be served. Grang ers are to take sandwiches or cookies. v , '. The event is an annual na tional affair set up by the National Grange for the pur pose of letting the general public know who Grangers are, the aims and objects of the Organization and what it stands for. The last meeting was held Oct. 8 and opened with Master Kamping presiding. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved. . . - . Two new members are Mr. and Mrs. Hoping, whose mem bership was approved and ac cepted on transfer from Loom is, Calif. They have purchased the property just west of the Grange Hall. They both play the piano and performed at the meeting. Darby introduced his old business problem and how and when to get the load of wood into the shed. Well he won't have to worry anymore for the wood now reposes in the shed ready for winter dis posal.
