I ave been living together in our old house. I find the house very in convenient and uncomfort able. I want to share an apart ment with a friend in the downtown area of our city. , My mother is horrified by the Idea. I feel that I'm old enough to have my own place. Moth er often gets on my nerves by asking me too many ques tions and involving herself in my social life. She always monopolizes the conversation when I haye friends over. When I come home with a date she insists upon fixing a snack for us, no matter how late it is. I want to be on my own. Mrs. L.P-I definitely: do not approve of young single girls living by themselves. I know that a lot of them do It today, but that doesn't make it the right thing. I am a broad-minded person and I wouldn't mind June's living at a club or someplace where there is some supervision, but ; arbright new star on display at the - mm HEARING AID "PARADEOF PROGRESS" e 29 smaller than previous Zenith model Weighs only oz. wiln battery v- Full-powered, 4 transistors Lets you hear the telephone - at ear lever - Separate on-ofT switch ... pre :' cision volume-control ' SEC IT TODAY .. mill TV valuable booklet. Automatic, electric laundry equipment for the home eliminates wash-day woes;.-. . allows the homemaker to wash and dry the dirtiest clothes simply by setting a dial and "flicking a switch . . . Many things (es pecially the kids' wash, and wear clothes) come from the electric washer and .dryer so smooth that .no this bachelor apartment idea is terrible. I was never aware that she was annoyed with my pres ence. I have always tried to be cordial and entertaining when June has guests. Many of her friends have compli mented me on being a charm ing hostess and an interesting person. June has complete freedom. She has hurt me deeply by her annoyance with my mere presence. I always thought my children loved me. I guess I was wrong. ... The- Council: We agree that bachelor quarters for single girls are not the most desir able living quarters. Yet many girls are driven to it by un favorable conditions at home, Most parents seem to have difficulty in accepting the sta tus of adult children. A girl of 25 should be quite capable of running her own home, but if she is unmarried and living at home she is usually forced into the position of a child living in a parent's home. . r . ' It isn't hard to see why June should resent her moth er's social operations, no mat ter how successful they are. When June receives friends she should be the charming hostess, not her mother. She should have the responsibility for creating a successful even ing and should get any comp liments that might be handed out. " Mrs. L. . P. is also . wrong to intimidate her daughter, giving her the guilty feeling that her desire for independ ence implies lack of love. This just isn't the case. - On the other" handMrs: L.P.'s strong need to play a leading role in her. daughter's social af fairs strongly smacks of a lack of unselfish love. It is all too easy for a part ent to smother or enslave uni der the guise of service or goodness to a child. We think Mrs. L.P. should make a strenuous effort to see these things from June's point of view. Perhaps, she can change her behavior and June won t find it necessary to leave home to enjoy her independence. ". ' (Copyright, 1959 General Features Corp.) Frequent Killings In Cuba Result of Accidental Shots Havana -UPD- In the still ness of a warm Caribbean eve ning, a shot rings out and a body slumps to the ground. Police are summoned to the scene and quickly confirm that another Cuban has been killed or wounded by small arms fire. Sometimes, the victim is a young school girl; sometimes a balding businessman out for a late stroll. Sometimes, the victim is a bearded veteran of rebel forces who fought so many months in the Sierra Maestra mountains. Shot Accidentally ' They were- not the, targets of any gang of terrorists working against the govern ment of Prime Minister Fidel Castro. They had been shot -accidentally - by members of the Revolutionary Army it self. According to a count by Combate, one of the govern ment's strongest newspaper supporters, 10 persons were killed and 35 wounded in Ha vana by such accidents within a recent three-month period. The result has been an or der by the Revolutionary army restricting the display of arms without justifiable cause, under penalty of arrest and 30 days confinement. The army also declared an auto matic 15 days in jail for any one found drinking while car rying arms. Similar preventive . steps are. being taken by Havana police, who also have been in volved in some accidental small arms shootings.-; One ranking member of the Revolutionary army explain ed what has been happening this way: Not Surprising "The accidental shootings are not surprising, although very unfortunate. Most of our training was received in the hills where we fought as guer rillas, not as garrison soldiers. We kept our weapons ready for action at any moment. In the sparsely populated moun tains an occasional escaped shot seldom did any more damage than strike a tree or rock." There are still other reas ons, though. Most Of the men who fought in the rugged Cu ban mountains against the Fulgencio Batista dictator ship consider their sidearms a badge of - honor along with their olive drab field uniforms ANGLER'S NEW ANGLE Waltham, Mass:-0JP1-A tinj depth sounder has been de veloped which is designed to help fishermen land the big ones. L. C. (Jack) Binford made the statement at a meeting of a Columbia Basin Interagency subcommittee to discuss recre ational resources of the pro posed Round Butte dam on the Deschutes river. Portland General Electric company seeks to build the dam. Binford said that with the Deschutes river "practically inaccessible," the various state and federal agencies involved with it have "no uniform sys tem of, roadway planning" and in general "plan in different directions with total lack of coordination." PGE Man Replies Waldemar Seton, speaking for PGE, said Round Butte dam would increase the ac cessibility of the Deschutes area, both on the waters of the dam's lake and through access roads which it plans to build. He denied the firm was "high-balling" the dam. He said PGE filed its preliminary permit in 1952. ' "We cannot sit and wait until our customers are out of electricity," he said. The State Water Resources -board conducted a hearing in to the dam last week.
