Each is 750 long. (UPI Telephoto) Slash Burning in Area About Done Slash burning operations in the Rogue River National for est this year are nearing com pletion, according to Carroll E. Brown, forest supervisor. In each of the six districts of the forest, district rangers assisted by other forest ser vice personnel and logging crews, have been burning re cently logged areas of un merchantable debris to re duce the forest fire hazard. The work is done under con trolled conditions under prev iously prepared plans, Brown noted. The supervisor emphasized that controlled burning of logging slash is necessary to prevent the occurrence of ac cidental wild fires in the highly flamamable material during the dry summer months. He said 1,800 acres of slash has been burned since opera tions started in mid-September. Burning is expected to be completed by the end of this month. BOND RECOVERING Santa Monica, Calif. - (UPS -Actor Ward Bond, star of the television series "Wagon Train" was recovering in a hospital Saturday from a case of acute bronchitis. He enter ed the hospital Friday on the advice of his physician. Science Program Starts at RRHS Rogue River-The travelling science program in this area got under way at Rogue River High school last week. Lies Weigart, former teach er at Rogue River and Grants Pass, will spend one week working with instructors and students in the field of bi ology. The program is supported by the National Science Foun dation with, the University of Oregon as the center of the Northwest area consisting of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. HagDe Point Efesodente To Vote Monday 001 Sond tissue Ealge Point-Registered vot ers in Eagle Point will vote at a special election tomor row on a $130,000 bond issue to help finance construction of a sanitary sewer system for Eagle Point. Voting -will be at the Eagle Point High school gymnasium between 8 ajn. and 8 pan. The proposed sewer system and oxidation pond will take care of two to three times as many people as the city now hast Mayor Ed Putman and the council noted. . The proposal stems from re quests by the state that the city install a sewer system because the present lack of an adequate disposal system is a health hazard. Consulting Engineers - J. W. Cunningham and As-' sociates, consulting engineers, estimated the total cost of the project about $164,300. How ever, the city of Eagle Point added $5,700 for contingen cies, bringing the total esti mated cost to $170,000. : Of that total, however, Put nam pointed out, only $130, 000 will be subject to approval by the voters for general ob ligation bonds. The remainder of the proposed sewer system would be financed through other means. Engineer s estimated it would cost ' $76,500 'to con struct the sewer system to the city limits, including all lat erals, truck, manholes, clean outs, and other facilities. Land for the pond site will cost an estimated $11,000 the engi neers said. General Experience Councilmen'said that it has been the general experience of other communities engaged in similar projects that con sulting engineers tend to be cautious in estimates, and in many cases actual bids receiv ed sometimes are somewhat lower than the original esti mates. Of the total estimated cost, $40,000 is a tentative amount which the city hopes to pay under the Bancroft act. Ban croft bonds are 10-year bonds figures to be assessed on a front foot basis. Figuring about 30,000 front feet to be assessed in Eagle Point, the council noted, this would fig ure out to about $1.35 per front foot, if the individual elects to pay cash, or about 10 cents per front foot per year if the 10-year plan is used.. - Another $18,000 is estimat ed to come from hook - up charges, the council said. Hook-up charge for the school will be $1,500 and for about 220 residences at $75 per resi dence the charges will amount to about $16,500. Charge on Water Bills . The council noted that the majority of Eagle Point, resi dents who have been paying the $2.50 charge appearing on water bills for some time will have more than two-thirds of their $75 hook-up charge al ready paid. While originally general obligation' bonds of $130,000 will be sold, the $18,000 will reduce the amount of such .bonds to be paid over a 20 year period to $112,000. The. engineers x estimated that, the $112,000 in obliga tion bonds at per cent in terest would equal about $770.47 per month over the 20-year period. Monthly re ceipts would be an estimated $525, including the deduction for maintenance costs of $75. The deficiency per month is estimated to be $245.47. Deficiency Paid The $245 per month defic iency could be paid for by about a 7.5 mill tax increase, the council noted. The city, the council added, is eligible for $23,000 in federal aid, whih if it is obtained," it should eliminate the millage increase. The council noted that the oxidation pond was chosen chosen instead of a disposal plant because from all infor mation available, the ponds are just at satisfactory as the disposal plants, and the initial cost is much lower. Mainten ance costs also are a fraction of those for a disposal plant, councilmen said. - If the bond issue is approv ed, the council said it intends to enact an ordinance requir ing within a reasonable length of time after completion of the sewer that all residences, house trailers and businesses be required to connect with the sewer. The council pointed out that the consulting engineers re tained have had considerable experience and are considered reliable. The firm is familiar with Eagle Point since it has made other estimates in pre vious years. i California Men Are Arrested for Theft Theft "of a coin changing machine early this month from the Koin-O-Matic laun dry was cleared up with the arrest Thursday of Michael Leslie Brown, 18, of Ontario, Calif., and Robert Owen Zur cher, 19, Los Angeles, Calif., according to Medford police. Masons Master Sets Grants Pass Visit David W. Pearson, Port land, grand master of Masons in Oregon, will pay his official visit to Masonic district 11 at a meeting in the Masonic hall, Grants Pass, Thursday, Oct. 22, at 7:45 p.m. He will be accompanied by other grand lodge officers and will out line his program for the com ing year, with emphasis on the public schools. Officers and other members of lodges in the district will attend. They include Warren lodge at Jacksonville; Belt, Kerby; Cascade, Shady Cove; Ashland; Medford and Central Point. David C.
