The bureau's census of re tail trade covering 1954 show ed that retail sales that year $p Afedford totalled $49,424,- 000. :- The current census shows Medford ith 344 retail es tablishments in 1958, Ashland with 113 and the entire coun ty, 686. Ashland's retail sales in 1978 totalled $10,359,000, and thee county as a whole, $g7,67,00o0. " Grants Pass sales in 1958 for 215 establishments total led $27,741,000 an increase of 5,3 per cent over 1954. Kla math Tails' 334 establish ments had a total of $51,477, 000, an increase of 15.8 per cent during the period. Sales by retail trade estab lishments in Oregon during 1958 totalled $2.1 billion, an increase of $167 million or 9 per cent since the 1954 census. Retail Establishment Oregon retail sales last year failed to match national growth in the continental U.S., which reported a 17 per cent increase during the per iod. Many Oregon cities show a decline in sales from 1954 to 1858 which reflects in part the recession last year in lum- Iger areas, according to Harold C. Ckarry, manager of the Poitf land field office of the de partment of commerce. ,Reteil trade establishments ij the state had a total of 76, 654 paid employees during the work week ended nearest Nov. 15, 1958, a 10 per cent increase over .that week in 1954. A total of 19,333 active proprietors and partners were engaged in operation of the establishments. ...
