Tests Theory of ; Radiation Belts Cambridge, Mass. - (Science Q Service)-The suspected exis ence of natural radiation belts trapped in the sun's magnetic field was tested for the firs known time by an astroeme observing the total sola eclipse from a jet plane flyisft at 35,000 feet. ' Dr. J. Allen Hynek, ageot ate director of the Smiths ian Astrophysical ObservatoC here, said it would take bo a week to glean the desivefc information from the ecHg photographs. . . - Polaroid Filter used The pictures of the blacketl out sun were taken, using f especially made Polaroid ii)m at three positions. They be scanned to see if light fro the tenuous outer atmosphere of the sun, the solar "corole usually visible only during a total eclipse, is circularly po larized. If so, Dr. Hynek's jet flight will have proved theory concerning the sun s magnetic field recently pro posed by Dr. E. P. Ney of the ' University of Minnesota. " This would show that, lik the earth, the sun is surround ed by a vast region of radia tion trapped there by the solar magnetic field. Ground viewers of the total eclipse, which occurred short ly after dawn on Oct. 2 in a 40-mile wide strip that includ ed Boston area,,were eclipsed by clouds. However, radio as tronomers at Harvard College Observatory and the Air Force Cambridge Reseach' Center, unhampered by the low cTud cover, reported that they had successfully recorded effects of the moon'a passage on the sun's radio wave emissions. 84-Foot Antenna Dr. A. E. Lilley. irTchar of Harvard's radio astronomy program, said observations? 1,420 megacycles with the foot dish -shaped antenna, showed some structure tp the sun but that about a weeQ would be needed to analyst the data and draw further co$ elusions. . ; The AFRC v observation were made with an 84-foejl antenna, one of the largest M the U.S. Time will also K needed to analyze these Q J3 e G3 9 ! - o 1 r t now! featherweisht comfort . . . - ; .- - . ... . and au me warmm vuu u i TWEIGHT BLANKET ONLY TWO POUNDS! m .... . .
