Rich ard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) au thor of . the measure. The first hearing was held at Reedsport Monday. Neuberger, inspecting the Dunes area Tuesday, accused Gov. Mark Hatfield and the secretary of the Governor's Natural Resources Committee of falsehood tactics, specifi cally in saying that the Dunes hold danger for small chil dren and that climatically the site is unfavorable for a na tional park. Neuberger said it was be yond him "why anyone would run down his own state, parti cularly when what he says isn't true." The person will sudden- lv find him self unable to talk or to move his mus cles and he may stay this way for hours, or for .three or four days. Then he re- covers.As with most fa Dr. Alvares milial and inherited diseases, we physicians know little about the mechanism of the illness, and hence have no treatment for it. We can hardly expect to have any for some time. We first must learn more about the chemis try of nerves and muscles. What is sad is that the par ents or relatives of many of these patients use up all their funds taking the invalid from one doctor and one clinic to another. Usually, I strongly advise against this because, when an able physician in perhaps a large medical cen ter says there is no known treatment for a disease and particularity an inherited di sease - the people had better not go on spending all the family's savings on travel and repeated examinations. I hate to be so pessimistic, but these are the facts. Lack of Soma Gens Apparently, in the cases of most of these people, there is a lack of some gene (one of the. thousands of microscopic elements in our cells that d : termine what we are), the gene which would make - it impossible for the body to carry out a certain very neces sary chemical reaction. To show what I mean: in cases of diabetes, hundreds of thous ands of tiny cells in the pan creas (digestive gland which lies back of the stomach) fail to develop well and to func tion properly. Usually, for some years, these glands work well enough, but then they shrivel up and the person is left without the normal chem ical mechanism for using su gar. Eventually, the little glands may largely disappear. When I was a young man in medicine, before 1923, all children with diabetes soon wasted away and died. And then that miraculous sub stance, insulin, was made from the pancreas of animals, and the children lived and grew up. Now, our chemists are preparing for us one new drug after another such as older diabetics can take by mouth. In the same way, when enough research is done on the chemistry of muscle, we probably will have at our dis- posal chemicals which will enable persons with chronic j paralyses of several types to get up out of their beds and j to stay well. Any day the dis- j covery will come. i In the meantime, young i men and women who know that, in their families, there runs a tendency to hereditary paralyses when they are thinking of marriage should do everything they can to find out if the same tendency runs in the family -of the person they are thinking of marry ing. Then they can know that the chances are that if they have several children, some of them will be paralyzed and will Brag out a miserable existence. As I write this, in comes a woman who is terribly un happy because three of her five children are not growing up right; one is mentally re tarded; one has mild fits and one is incorrigible at home and at school. When many a young woman chooses the father of her chil dren almcst anyone who pro poses will doj Doctors' Thinking Changing If, some 30 or40 years ago, I had gotten up in a Medical Society ' and suggested that the members organize a medi cal service with almost exclu sively group practice, with the qualifications of the physic ians on the p.- el to be de termined by a medically con trolled board, and the doctors paid through a Health Insur ance Group, I probably would have immediately been ex pelled by the Society. Today, I find in the Journal of the American Medical Association an article on medical care un der the Health Insurance Plan of greater New York, written by Dr. Edwin F. Daily. He describes the plai. which costs $42.72 per year for one per son, $85.44 for a man and wife, and $128.16 for a family with children. These rates are 21 per cent higher if the in come of the subscriber is over $6,000 per yea" or if the fam ily income is over $7,300 per year. Some 88 per cent of the money paid in as premiums goes to the medical men who give the services. The organi zation is making a great effort to give ever better service to the subscribers, and every year they learn to do a better job. In other district court ac tion, George Alonzo Warner, 48, of Jacksonville, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and battery.
