TV Qudz Show Contestant TesftDffles Answers IProvBded; Moves KeDiearsed Washin gton-(UPD-A big mon ey winner from the now de funct TV quiz show "21" testi fied today he was given the anSSvers to all questions prior to his appearance in a na tionally televised contest with Charles Van Doren. Herbert Stempel, 32, grad uate student at New York Uni. versfty, said producers of the show supplied him in advance with all the questions and answers and coached him on the acting gestures he used on the show. Stempel was the first wit ness as a House commerce subcommittee opened a four da investigation of charges that some big name television quiz shows have been rigged. Before questioning Stem pel, the subcommittee turned out the lights in the House caucus room and watched a filmed reproduction of the 30 minute show "21" that was seen by millions of Americans Nov. 28, 1956. Program Ended ia Tie In the show, Stempel, then champion of the game "21," with $69,500 in winnings to his credit, was pitted against a new challenger, Van Doren, a Columbia English professor. The climax of the program came when Stempel faced the threat of losing $31,500 of his winnings to Van Doren if he failed to answer correctly four questions about opera arias. He answered them correct ly and the program ended with the two contestants tied at 21 points each. This required a playoff the follow ing week. Under questioning from subcommittee counsel Robert Lishman, Stempel testified that his performance was re hearsed from start to finish. He said he was told that he would tie at 21 points with Van Doren, after first , tying at 17 points midway in the program. , Committee Chairman Oren We Give d&l GREEN STAMPS CENTRAL REXALL DRUG Main um4 Central m FREE PARKING ALWAYS PW-l'eek Service SPECIALS? Mark Hatfield hasn't "closed the door" on establishment of the Oregon Dunes as a National Seashore, Rep. Charles O. Porter (D Ore.) Monday urged Hatfield to clear up bis "attitude and position" on the controver sial issue. Porter, here during the cur rent Senate subcommittee hearing on Sen. Richard L. Neuberger's plan to create a federal park in the Dunes area, said if Hatfield takes no action Porter might ask for a cancellation' of a similar hearing Oct. 31. Owes It To Paople Said Porter: "The gover nor owes it to the people of Oregon to clarify his position with respect to the Oregon Dunes seashore park, and this should be done without de lay." : Porter, author of a bill sim ilar to Neuberger's, said Hat field, ought to personally ap pear at Wednesday's hearing in Eugene, also conducted by Neuberger, to "clear up" his stand. Legislation Disfavored The Natural Resources Committee of the governor has already strongly disfa vored the park legislation and other state groups have voiced disapproval. But Porter said Hatfield recently told him that he "hadn't closed the door" as far as the park plan was concerned. Neuberger also has stated CHARGE IT! Service Opposition Seen . ' Several witnesses for and against creation of the park appeared during the session and it developed that the U-. S. Forest Service has ex pressed opposition to the park "on the secretarial level." The J- S. Park Service, a division of the Interior De partment, which would ad minister a seashore park, has not yet indorsed the proposal. Edward Crafts, Washington, D. C, assistant chief of the U. S. Forest Service, admitted to Neuberger under question ing that top-level officials in the Department of Agricul ture,, which has jurisdiction over the Fores1 Service, have expressed opposition to the park. . The boundaries of the park as outlined in pending legisla tion would take in about 12,000 acres of present Forest Service land, which apparent ly is the basis for Forest Serv ice opposition. : -J '. Neuberger pointed out, however, that Congress has transferred several hundred thousand acres of Forest Serv ice land to the Park Service in I creating such national parks as Glacier, Olympic, Kings Canyon and Grand Can yon. Among supporters of .the proposed, park were fJ Vern Ayres, manager of the Oregon Coast association; Oren Col lier, representing the Port Umpqua Chamber of ' Com merce, and William H. Hatfield's Natural Resources Committee, charg ing that its report "seems to be based on very little study, is short of facts, and presents those facts in a manner to in dicate the study was made solely for the purpose of sup porting a conclusion which was reached before the study was made.". Collier said the Port Ump qua Chamber of Commerce, while favoring establishment of the park, would like to see the area extended to include the dunes south of Reedsport. He recommended also adjust ment of boundaries to exclude Siltcoos lake. , ; : .': J. D. Leland, the Inter national .Paper company's vice president for western operations, and 'C. W. Richen, manager of Pacific Northwest timber operations for Crown Zellerbach Corp., also testi fied. Leland made it clear that his company does not oppose a national seashore park in the region, but he suggested the boundaries be adjusted in pending legislation to exclude industrial forest land and po tential industrial water sup ply sources. - Richen . said the proposed boundaries would .encompass 38 per cent-of his company's Tahkenitch Tree Farm, and "might very well force our withdrawal from this part of Oregon as an operating area."
