Their physi cian has satisfied them that he can find no evidence in the medical literature to indicate that this operation, ever does the man any harm of any kind - physical or mental. It certainly does not interfere with . .either his sexual desire or potency. - . - .N Now, the man's only ques tion is, "If, for some reason he or - his wife should very much, want to have another child, could the tubes be open ed again?" . . : I now read in the July num ber of Plantation Health, edit ed by Dr. N. P. Larsen, of Honolulu, that at a recent meeting of the Human Better ment Association of America, Dr. Rieser quoted papers by urologists who had collected reports from doctors who in Emeritus Consultant in M'ritrtne. Many 'physicians refuse to : perform the operation for fear that later the man might like j to see if he could get a lot of j money by suing for supposed I mayhem. There is always the I fear that a jury may ignore j the fact that, before witness- , es, the patient begged the doc- j tor to operate on him. ! Several of the experts at the conference doubted if there was much justification for this fear, especially if, be fore operating, the surgeon were to have a consultation with one or more physicians. Then, it would be rather dif ficult for the patient to prove in court that the doctor had assaulted him' and maimed him against his will. As Dr. Stone said, in India he found recently a great up surge of interest in this opera tion of vasectomy (steriliza tion) as a means of combatting the great danger of devastat ing over-population. United Artists Corp. mailed 2,000 of the cards to theater owners, critics and press agents last July to publicize a movie about the life of the 18th Century Spanish artist.- The post office impounded the cards and United Artists went to court. Justice Depart ment lawyers were assigned to prepare the government's case. They said in a formal an swer that the cards were not obscene. The post office was expected to release them for mailing soon. . "We just decided it was perhaps not a very good case," a Justice Department spokesman said. ' 7 ,: , :- The Council: We don't think secret engagements make much senses Publicity is the point of an engagement. It is an announcement to the world of intention to marry. If the parties are hot "prepared to make-this , announcement they should keep their feelings for one another fairly private. It means that there is a measure of uncertaintly in their rela tionship. - ' j Torn between his parents' pressure and Lucy's, Pat is try ing to keep both of them satis fied without going through all the trouble of knowing what his own thoughts and feelings are. He should try to find out. It is natural for a young couple dating steadily to want to feel some security in their relationship. It is also natural for them,, to feel at;, times burdened by their commit ment to one another-especial-Iy if this entails ' social isola tion for a prolonged period. There is. little question that Lucy and Pat will both feel tempted by the possibility of some extracurricular enjoy ment during their long separa tion. Lucy is asking for firm insurance against this tempta tion, overlooking the fact that sometimes engagements are broken, and broken by the partner who wanted the commitment. A three-year engagement is awfully long in anyone's book. Older individuals who know their own minds are better able to sustain them, but young ones often desire them simply because they don't know their own minds and want ; protection against finding out. It isn't a very good basis for planning a mar riage. ;We think it would be wiser "to let their feelings stand the risk of time and further experience. (Copyright 1959.
