Or. $35,600 Grant for Research Received By Oregon Corvallis-A S35.600 grant has been received by Oregon State college from the Nation al Science 'Foundation for basic research on Douglas fir that will include - growing seedlings in special indoor chambers where t-Siperature, light, and moisture are con trolled. The four-year research proj ect will provide ew informa tion on physiological vaifia tions and $ differences oin growth behavior of Douglas fir collected from through out the gyest. It will helpChnswar ques tions as Ieo how much of the variation is a regplt of genetic differences or simply re sponse to environment, Dr K. Ferrell,' associate pro fessor of forest Management and project leader, said. The two special indoor "growth" chambero will be 5 feet wide, 11 feet long, and 10 feet high.jThey aPe being built now by a Portland firm and will be ready for installa tion on campus in January. Irgens-Moller collected the seed for use in forest genetics tree improvement studies. He will work with Ferrell on the new research. Kenneth Krue ger of Coeur d'Alene, Ida., a graduate student in forestry will glso assist on the project. He was earlier awarded a Na tional Science Foundation fel lowship for advanced work at OSC.
