Larsen Tues day night became the first known casualty of the Soviet moon rocket. , - Larsen, in a downtown bar, gang out the challenge, "The Russians didn't hit the moon." Seconds later a tankard of beer crashed across his head, thrown by i sailor of Soviet nationality. , While Larsen waited for an amublance to whisk him to a hospital he explained that he and the Russian sailor-were old friends. . World riJL j HmIIXtxixZ III n IM Vast Study of Tourism Being Made in West European Nations New York-UPD-Now that European travel has become a big business, the people who transport, house, feed and ad vise tourists are trying to find out just who their customers are. - ' For the first time known to the travel industry, a vast study is being made of tour ism in 16 western European countries. The survey, which will take two years to complete, covers who travels and why, where they go, how they get there, how much they spend, what they like and don't like,, and even why some persons travel while others stay home. ; : To Distribute Results , Results of the study will go to travel organizations and related interests in 64 nations through the International Un ion of Official Travel organ izations and five key inter national tourist-hotel organizations. The travel habits of nationals of these countries will be analyzed along with those of American tourists. "This study is designed to probe every aspect of Euro pean travel, particularly to the personal characteristics of the traveler, his desires, wants and needs as well as to de termine his reaction to the adequacy o traveler facilities and the effectiveness of pro motional methods now in use;" said Harry Carter, man ager of Market Research for the Boeing airplane company and one of the organizers of the survey. Rapid Development "This European market is in a state of rapid develop ment, spurred by rising stand ards of living, the common market treaties and the strik ing technological advances made in transports the jets." " Carter and others involved in the travel industry ask: "How can travel interests sell goods and services and plan if they don't have measurements?" That is why they are trying to determine the size, nature, distribution and characteris tics of European travelers. They want to know how trav el decisions are made and how they can be stimulated. They want ": to define the probable growth of travel markets, de termine present shortages in hotels and other services, seek ways, to, develop off-season travel and determine the char acteristics of lion-travelers so they can be converted. To Conduct Interviews Survey experts will inter view travelers and non-travelers. They will give psycholog ical tests to determine the un derlying reasons why spme persons prefer ships to air planes and other refuse- to travel by sea. "It is well known' that peo ple with , different personality characteristics behave differ ently in r ard to travel, and that the presence or absence of certain, personal character istics can serve as a basis for predicting travel behavior," an expert associated with the study said. . The surveyors need to know more than age, sex, income, nationality, family status, ed ucation ' and occupation, he said. They need an "intimate understanding" of such fac tors as a desire for a change, a wish to improve one's self through travel,, a love of pleasure and a need for. fi nancial security, he said. On the other hand, the re searchers want to know what part fear of the unknown and a lack of energy and initia tive play in keeping the non traveler at home. They also want to know more about the "relative, non traveler." This is a person who either refuses to use cer tain modes of transportation or does not take certain kinds of trips. He is quite different from the absolute non-traveler. This fellow won't cross an inter national boundary at all. 'Waters of the Great Salt Lake in Utah are said to be about 23 per cent salt in con tent. By contrast the salt content of the Atlantic Ocean is about 3.5 per cent. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medferd, Or. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1959 Mrs. Khrushchev On Threshold of Great Adventure Washington- (UPD -Mrs. Nika Khrushchev is on the thresh hold of the greatest adven ture of her life. To some, such , adventure comes at 20 or in middle age. But to Mrs. Khrushchev, it has come in the twilight years. .... At 60, nothing that she has done so far and little that she might possibly dof in the fu ture can eclipse the impor tance of her first visit to the United States. It isn't that Russia's first lady has led a dull existence or that coming to America is the most significant thing that any foreigner can do. To Share Responsibility. It is simply that Nikita Khrushchev has put this visit on such a high pedestal that some of the responsibility for its success or failure is bound to be shared by his wife. . ' i If the Soviet premier had i wanted to make this prima-! rily a business trip, he would j have come to America alone. ' Instead, he is making a tre mendous gesture in interna tional public relations-bringing almost his entire family and a son-in-law to boot. . He is in effect saying, "See what a family man I am, and I see how wonderful this typ ical Soviet family is." Archibald Hearing Slated for Oct. 1 Reno, Nev. - (UPD A pre liminary hearing for accused slayer Thayne Archibald, 20, today was set for Oct. 1. Archibald, who faces first degree murder charges in the shooting of Larry Waters, 17, Livermore, Calif., was , ar raigned before Justice of the Peace William Beamer Tues day afternoon. If Beamer finds justification for a trial after a hearing next month, the soft-spoken youth from Roy, Utah, will be bound over to District Court.
