.J Fund Raising Drive For Scouts Gets The 1960 local fund raising campaign of the Crater Lake Council, Boy Scouts of Amer ica, was launched Sept. 10 with local meetings held in each participating community Council President J. A. Mc Dougall has announced. Funds obtained by more than 1,000 volunteers will make possible the continuation and expansion of the scouting program, he noted. Spearheading the drive con ducted within Jackson county outside the area covered by the United Fund, is R. A. Naumes, Medford, who will serve as chairman, forking with him in charge of their local communities are C. J. Malloy, Butte Falls; Robert Force, Gold Hill; D?.vid Harbi son, Eagle Point; and Mel Ro chester, Prospect. Receives Charter McDougall stated that the Crater Lake Council receives its charter each year from the National Council of Boy Scouts and that area leaders determine what budget is re quired for the coming year. The same volunteers, he add ed, have the responsibility of carrying out the local finance campaign. The Crater Xake Council is headquartered at 500 East Main st., Medford, under the direction of Scout Executive J. W. Compton, and directs scouting programs for Jose phine, Jackson and Siskiyou counties. Within the council are 4,000 boys enrolled as ac tive members and 1,500 volun teer leaders. The need for funds has been intensified with the addition of the new Exploring program, open to all boys of high school age, McDougall pointed out. Participating in this program, which includes personal fit ness, social, vocational explor ation, outdoor activities, citi zenship, and seryice exper iences, are 300 boys in 27 units 16 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. A Sunday, Sept. 13, 1959 Holsfein Heifer Killed by Hunter The first black - and - white "deer'. to be shot so far this year was reported to the Jack son county sheriffs office Thursday by Clein W. Poulton, Butte Falls star route, box 177, Eagle Point. Poulton informed sheriffs deputies that a yearling Hol ctein heifer had been shot in the stomach and killed. Poul ton also reported the possible theft of. a 3-months-old calf, according to the report, but investigators said the calf was later found dead, apparently a victim of natural causes. Deputies surmised the heif er had been shot by an im patient .' or perhaps near sighted deer hunter. The general deer hunting season begins Oct.'3. Bids Opened for Two Bridge Jobs Salem Bids were opened here last week for two bridge projects in Jackson county. ; Harley E. Lowe, 516 Gran ite st., Ashland, was apparent low bidder at $9,601 for con struction of a 51-foot rein forced concrete slab bridge on Old Stage rd. over -Kane creek. There were 12 other bid ders for the project. Walder and Kenworthy, Portland, was apparent low bidder for construction of an 88-foot reinforced concrete bridge over Long Branch crek on Rogue River dr. about 4.5 miles south of Trail. The firm bid $20,781. . There .were 12 other bid ders on the project. The contract will be award ed by the; Jackson county court. within the council. Each post adopts a specialty which it carries out with the assistance of experts and the use of what ever equipment is needed. . ., Cub Scout Division The Cub Scout division of the council includes 2,000 members who take part in 85 packs, carrying out a home centered program open to boys 8 through 10 years old. A total of 74 troops with 1,550 Boy Scouts 11 years and older have a program empha sizing outdoor skills and ac tivities and personal growth. . Naumes pointed out that Boy- Scouts learn- democracy by electing their own leaders and planning patrol and troop programs, and that energies are channeled into such con structive activities as camping, hiking, and learning such use ful skills and woodcraft and first aid under a program de signed to" develop good citi zens. - Under Way in Area NO DEMONSTRATION Little Rock, Ark.-(UPD-Gov.
