"Each accident report re ceived by our department," he said, "is pinpointed on a map so we can see where accident 'hot spots' are developing." .The next problem is to de termine whether, the situation could be remedied by 'engi neering or enforcement or, in some cases, both. Safety ex perts then use the accumu lated reports to guide them in developing safety education programs. '.' Accident , reports must be filed within 24 hours, the po lice chief reminded.. ' When local agencies are through with the reports, they are forwarded to the. depart ment of motor vehicles in Sa lem where they are analyzed to help state officials plan needed statewide traffic safe ty activities and spot accident prone drivers.
