I D.A.'s Remarks Lead to Mistrial Salem (LTD - Circuit Judge George Duncan Friday declar ed a mistrial in -the case of two young men and a girl be cause of publicized remarks by Marion County District Atr torney Hattie Kremen. The three young people were charged with being in volved in an attack on two Salem railroad employees last month. Mrs. Kremen had told 'a Salem organization Wednes day that public apathy, easy money and too-lenient juries were prime causes for in creased juvenile vandalism in the Salem area. War remark arinut the iuries - caused Judge Duncan to reset trial of the trio for October. They1 were returned to Marion county jail.' Mrs. Kremen had told the Salem Soroptomist club that "juries are too prone to return verdicts of innocent in many cases." Her remarks were re ported in the press. Hatfield Calls Attention to Week ; Salem - GoVi plant u. Hat field has asked Oregonlans to "renew our dedication to our nation's basic document which undergirds our free society" in calling attention to Consti tution Week. President Eisenhower has proclaimed the week of Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 as Con stitution Week on .the 172nd anniversary of the adoption of the constitution. Change in Board Selections Asked " Salem-fllPD-The State Board of Agriculture Thursday gave consideration to some, way to relieve the governor of ap pointment of numerous Com modity Commission "members. Gov " Mark Hatfield had asked the Board to work on this problem. No' definite action was taken, but the Board decided to send letters to Commodity Commissions asking them to suggest some means of trans ferring the appointing power and arriving at a decision be fore ' the next Legislature meets.' There was general agree ment that the governor should be relieved of this duty. The Board itself might make the appointments. Long Lost Brother Identified by Filler North Bend - (UPD - Mrs. Retta Thomas of North Bend Wednesday read a filler item in her newspaper telling how Ira Wiggs, 69, of Los Angeles, had swallowed poison rather than have his remaining leg amputated. He had lost t the other because of an auto acci dent. Mrs. Thomas then learned that Wiggs had a flower' and the word "Mother" tattbed on an arm. The man, said Mrs. Thomas, was a brother she had ' last heard from when he left for Alaska 17 years ago. U.S. GAINS POPULATION Washington (UPD - There were 177,399,000 men, wom en and children in the United States Aug. 1, the Census Bu re au estimated Friday. The bureau's new population esti mate was 2,906,000 persons higher than one year ago, an increase of 1.7 per cent. Friday. , Car Recovered - Sheriffs deputies recovered a stolen car at 10:45 p.m.Triday night near Bear creek, just north of Phoenix. The 1948 Studebaker convertible with a California license was found near a hobo camp on the creek banks. There is some question as to who actually owns the car, deputies said. -- - . Couple Located Mr. and Mrs. Roy Roberts, Knotty Pine Trailer Court, Rogue River, were contacted by sheriff's deputies Saturday afternoon after receiving a" phone call from a Mrs. Ivan Johnson, Oakridge, Ore., Saturday say ing Mrs. Roberts' mother, had died and will be buried on Tuesday. Shed Burns A shed on Table Rock rd. across from the state department of forest ry headquarters burned Satur day afternoon. The Central Point rural fire protection dis trict dispatched three trucks and the state forest patrol, one pumper. The rural fire district dispatcher thought at first that a house and barn had caught fire, he said. Car Abandoned Charles Jack Myers, 1127 West 10th. St., Medford, m reported an abandoned vehicle near the location during the ' past month to Medford police. Driver Cited George Har rison Schwieger, 1940 Or chard Home dr., operator of a Yellow Cab company car, was cited by Medford police Saturday for follojiving too closely. Schwieger's cab and a car driven by Lois Ann Kuble, 832 Pine st, Central Point, collided on Central ave. between Sixth and Main sts. Dog Bites Girl - Margaret Flora Bales, 6121 Table Rock rd., Central Point, reported to Medford police Saturday that a dog bit her daughter, Joyce Lorrine Bales, 7, in front of 30 North Central ave., Med ford. The girl was walking by a card rack to which the dog was tied when it seized the girl, injuring her little finger and ring finger on her right hand. Police said the dog is apparently owned by Sharron Lee and Karen Lou Hugdahl, 12, of 2230 Canal st., Medford. The child was taken to th& doctor for treat ment. Patient Moved -Mrs. Albert Frank, Medford resident who has been hospitalized in To ronto, Canada, following an automobile accident in July, has been transferred to Room 236, St. Joseph's hospital, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, according to information re ceived from relatives. It was stated that Mrs.. Frank "will be hospitalized for some time and that she is in a complete, body cast and unable to write. Mrs. Frank's husband, Major Albert Frank, ret., was killed in the accident which injured his wife. The couple's home is at 611 South Ivy street. Personal Patient - Arne Odegard, 845 Palm st, Medford, was listed as a surgery patient at Rogue Valley hospital Saturday. Vehicle Abandoned -An abandoned vehicle was" found on Court st. between Ohio and Crater Lake highway, Med ford, police said Saturday. It was registered to Axel W. Raski, Jacksonville. EUROPEAN JET SERVICE New York-OlPtt-Trans World Airlines will open non-stop jet service between New York and London on Nov. 23 and between New York and Paris Dec. 3. TWA announced that its 134-passenger Boeing 707 jetliners will make the trip to London in six hours and 25 minutes , and to Paris in six hours and 45 minutes. The London flights will continue to Frankfurt, Germany, and the Paris flights to Rome. Obituary MARTHA HASTINGS The body of Martha Ann (Annie) Hastings, who died in a local hospital Friday, will be forwarded by Conger-Morris to Ontario, Calif., for serv ices and interment. Mrs. Hastings was born Dec. 10, 1866, in Arkansas. Her residence was in Ontario, Calif., but she has been visit ing here in Medford for two months. She is survived by one brother, Marion Nolin, Okla homa; , three daughters, Mrs. Byron Ellis, Medford; Mrs. Harry Foster, San Diego; Mrs. Josie Morrison, Pasadena; two sons, Lafayette Hastings, Wat sonville, Calif.; Carl Hastings, Thermal, Calif.; 12 grandchil dren, 21 great grandchildren and two. great-great grand daughters.
