torney Hattie Kremen.
The three young people
were charged with being in
volved in an attack on two
Salem railroad employees last
month.
Mrs. Kremen had told 'a
Salem organization Wednes
day that public apathy, easy
money and too-lenient juries
were prime causes for in
creased juvenile vandalism in
the Salem area.

trial of the trio for October.
They1 were returned to Marion
county jail.'
Mrs. Kremen had told the
Salem Soroptomist club that
"juries are too prone to return
verdicts of innocent in many
cases." Her remarks were re

Selections Asked
" Salem-fllPD-The State Board
of Agriculture Thursday gave
consideration to some, way to
relieve the governor of ap
pointment of numerous Com
modity Commission "members.
Gov " Mark Hatfield had
asked the Board to work on
this problem.
No' definite action was
taken, but the Board decided
to send letters to Commodity
Commissions asking them to
suggest some means of trans
ferring the appointing power
and arriving at a decision be
fore ' the next Legislature
meets.'
There was general agree
ment that the governor should
be relieved of this duty. The
Board itself might make the
appointments.

Retta Thomas of North Bend
Wednesday read a filler item
in her newspaper telling how
Ira Wiggs, 69, of Los Angeles,
had swallowed poison rather
than have his remaining leg
amputated. He had lost t the
other because of an auto acci
dent. Mrs. Thomas then learned
that Wiggs had a flower' and
the word "Mother" tattbed on
an arm.
The man, said Mrs. Thomas,
was a brother she had ' last
heard from when he left for
Alaska 17 years ago.
U.S. GAINS POPULATION
Washington (UPD - There
were 177,399,000 men, wom
en and children in the United
States Aug. 1, the Census Bu
re au estimated Friday. The
bureau's new population esti
mate was 2,906,000 persons
higher than one year ago, an
increase of 1.7 per cent.

Airlines will open non-stop jet
service between New York
and London on Nov. 23 and
between New York and Paris
Dec. 3. TWA announced that
its 134-passenger Boeing 707
jetliners will make the trip to
London in six hours and 25
minutes , and to Paris in six
hours and 45 minutes. The
London flights will continue
to Frankfurt, Germany, and
the Paris flights to Rome.
