500,000 Hot Lunches May Be Served in Med ford District J. Russell Acheson, assist ant superintendent of Med ford schools, expects more than 500,000 hot lunches will be served during the school year starting Monday, Sept. 14. - He said he expected an ad ditional several hundred thousand half pints of milk to be sold, although they are in cluded in the hot lunch menu. The additional pints of milk will be sold to pupils who bring1 lunches. School lunch supervisor in the Medford district is Mrs. Virginia Wait. Mrs. Irene Drew is cook-manager at Med ford High school, Mrs. Genive Gray at McLoughlin Junior High, and Mrs. Hazel Withrow at Hedrick Junior High. Acheson noted that the ' school lunch program has be come an integral part of the school curriculum. The pur pose of the program is two fold: i 1. To maintain anfl improve the health of the "school child by providing an adequte noon meal. r 2. To provide satisfactory ' learning experiences in the Marine Recruiter Being Transferred First Sgt. Elzy Kees, who has been in charge of the Ma rine Corps recruiting station here for the past three years, has been transferred to the recruit depot, Parris " Island, S.C., for six weeks advanced administrative p r o c e d ures schooling. t- After completion of t h e school he will join the First Marine division at Camp Pen dleton, Calif. " Sergeant Kees is a veteran of more than 17 years service, and has been awarded the sil ver star medals He participat ed in several campaigns in the South Pacific and in the . Korean conflict. Taking over as non-commis-- sioned officer in charge is .'SSgt. Nutritional Requirements : The ' ' nutritional require ments for a Type A lunch are one-half pint of whole un favored milk; two ounces ot nrotein-rich food supplied from fresh cooked or pro cessed meat, poultry or fish, nh a ac a nr nnp pgrcr nr one- half cup dried beans, peas or soy beans or four tablespoons of peanut butter; three-fourths cup of raw, cooked or canned vegetables andor fruit; one or : more ; portions of bread, muffins or other hot breads made of whole-grain or en riched flour or cereal; and 100 Ranchers Are Expected to View More than 100 ranchers from Oregon and northern California are expected to at tend a demonstration of root- plowing, and reseeding worth less brush land to grass on the Applegate Thursday. 1 The demonstration is sched uled for 10 ajn. on Bill Pit- tock's ranch' along Humbug creek. S." soil conservation serv ice. The varieties include Pu bescent wheat grass, interme diate wheat grass, Harding erass. oaf grass.- Lana Vetch and sub clover. For the experi ment, combmations -may in clude Lana Vetch and tall oat. wheat grasses and sub-clover compared with Harding grass and sub clover and Alta Fes cue and sub-clover, Ault said! The price of a Type A lunch, Acheson said, is 25 cents for elementary school putfils and 30 cents for junior and senior high students. Weekly luncheon tickets (5 for $1.25) land monthly lunch eon tickets (20 lunches for $5) can be purchased, he said. Less Than Cost The lunches are served at less than cost to the pupil, he noted with the difference made up by federal and state subsidy of a few cents per meal, by surplus commodities furnished by the federal gov ernment, and by the district's contribution to overhead costs. Extra milk, other than that included in the Type A plate lunch, is sold at 3 cents per half-pint. , This reduced price is made possible through the special school milk program, which is designed to assist in expanding dairy outlets by encouraging increased milk consumption of the school child. - : Through the special school milk program, the district is reimbursed up to 4 cents for one-half pint of milk sold to students. The price charged the student is the dealer's price per one-half pint less the amount of reimbursement, plus the school handling charge. Acheson invited parents of pupils to visit and observe the cafeteria program in opera Four County Youths Win Fair Ribbons Four Jackson county 4-H members won ribbons in events at the state fair in Sa lem Friday. Glenna Brown of Central Point and Pat Strickland of Medford received blue rib bons in the storage C class of the home living division. Janice Main, Medford, re ceived a red ribbon in the outdoor cooks class of 4-H cooks, chefs and overnighters division. Penny Sampert, Med ford, received a red ribbon in the overnighters B call of the same division. To assist in maintaining a regular income into the household after retirement, the public should be aware of a policy being stressed by the Social Security adminis tration, Edward B. Jacobson, district manager of the Med ford office, said Saturday. ( To receive benefits prompt ly after retirement, a worker should file a claim for his ben efits 30 to 60 days before re tirements he knows he will be retiring on a certain date. This advance filing will give the Social Security adminis tration and the person claim ing benefits ample time to get information and evidence necessary to establish settle ment before the first check is due. It will also afford a widow and children who might be eligible the oppor tunity to file for dependent's b-nefits. Evidence Required : Generally evidence will be required to prove the age of the retired person and his wife. This may be a birth certificate or baptismal rec ord. If there is no such rec ord available, any record that is old and reliable may be sufficient. If there is a child under 18 or a child of any age who was disabled before 18, it will be necessary to have a birth certificate for the child, he said. , Evidence of the worker's earnings in the taxable year ending before the date of re tirement is also necessary. This proof may be a copy of the income tax withholding statement (Form W-2) or a copy of the income tax return for the self-employed person. By submitting this evidence on the first visit to the social security office future contacts may be unnecessary, - Jacob son said. This plan has been highly endorsed by large employers who have retirement plans supplementhtg social security benefit, by labor unions and by other organizations. : .
