Usually, the child who stammers is so nervous rest will be very beneficial,' espec ially if it is fortified with a sedative given under medical direction, Dr. C. S. Bluemel explained in Mental Hygiene, the publication of the Na tional Association for Mental Health. Meanwhile, what ever is causing the nervousness in the child should be discovered and eliminated, if possible. There may be too much com petition at the family table, and no one may be listening when the little fellow is try ing to talk. Still worse, an old er brother or sister may snatch speech away from him, and thus put him at a constant disadvantage. Belief 'Nearly Correct There is an old belief that children stammer because they think faster than they can talk. This is very nearly correct. Actually, a child does much of his thinking in eagerness and excitement, and he has many feelings and frustrations that could never be put into words, the retired psychiatrist, who lives in Englewood, Colo., explained. Even if he could calm his feelings and try to, think his way into speech, he would of ten lack the vocabulary to ex press himself. Thus, he would encounter a speech block a sort of road block in word thinking. Easily Broken The thinly organized speech of a child is easily broken by such common stresses as the excitement of a party or pic nic. The sustained excitement of Christmas, festivities can disrupt a child's speech pat terns more easily. Less con spicuous influences also break a child's speech. Family dis cord, the daily fear of a harsh teacher, or the neighborhood bully can cause anxieties and frustrations. In primary stammering, the thinking process is con fused. This leads to second ary stammering the stam merer tries to force words out during the silence. Thereupon begins an unnatural phase of effort and struggle, and sometimes contortion. The child may even use his fists and his larger body muscles in a futile attempt to speak. Heart Attack Can Result in Peptic Ulcers Boston- (Science Service) -You can get an ulcer from having a heart attack, four researchers said here. The important point to keep in mind, they told col leagues, is that ulcer therapy should seriously be consid ered for persons who have suffered an acute heart at tack. Clinical studies by these in vestigators indicate that such heart attacks, known as myo cardial infarctions, may be associated with increased gas tric secretions. This means that old peptic ulcers can again become troublesome, or that new ones can appear, the doctors report in the New England Journal of Medicine (July 30). A peptic ulcer can occur on the mucous mem brane of the esophagus, stom ach or duodenum. It is caused by the action of the acid gas tric juices. This report does not pro pose to examine the contro versial question of whether peptic ulcers occur more commonly in patients with coronary artery disease Jhan in the general population, the scientists emphasized. Suddenly Complicated Instead, on the basis of six cases on which their report is based, they wrote: "The course of acute myo cardial infarction may be suddenly complicated by the development of serious mani festations of active peptic ulceration. . . . That such an association may be more than coincidental, however, is sug gested by the occurrence of acute peptic ulceration during a variety of stressful situa tions." Thus, anti-coagulants, drugs that delay blood clotting, should be withheld or used with extreme caution, Drs. Joseph C. Shipp, Victor W. Sidel, Robert M. Donaldson, Jr., and Seymour J. Gray, all of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, concluded. Nickels have been used as money in the U. S. for approx imately 90 years.
