Russians Balking Chicago (Science Service) The" Russian civilian who balks at the planned life ahead of him sometimes push es himself through the one door of escape . . . into sick ness. Crude Vaccine Curbs Syphilis In Lab Animals Ann Arbor, Mich. (Science Service)-A crude vaccine that immunized 50 per cent of a group of laboratory animals against syphilis has been in troduced here. The vaccine was developed by Dr. Albert N. Wheeler of the University of Michigan here. He indicated that future refinements will lead to a pro duct that will offer even high er levels of protection against syphilis. Likewise, it could show the way toward world wide protection against yaws, pinta, bejel and other syphilis like diseases, he pointed out. Dr. Wheeler has worked with the vaccine for more than one year, but he has not yet tested it on humans.; 'Pale Thread' Syphilis is caused by a one cell, corkscrew-shaped bac teria called Treponema pal lidum. The term means "pale thread" and refers to the ap pearance of the germ under the microscope. ' Early experiments wifh a vaccine of killed whole bac teria proved unsuccessful but a year ago Dr. Wheeler started a fresh approach with the aid of a three-year research grant from the venereal disease branch of the U. S. Public Health Service. He began destroying quant ities of the spirochetes by me chanical means and from the pulp he extracted fractions of proteins and ' carbohydrates. These fractions are crude mix tures of several types of pro teins and carbohydrates rather than single purified units. His results to date show that the protein fraction can pro vide complete ' immunization for 10 . per cent of the test animals and promotes strong resistance in an additional 40 per cent. Some Collegians Don't Borrow Books Ann Arbor, Mich.- (DPD -A study by Lester Asheim, dean of the University of Chicago's Graduate Library School, showed that 15 per cent of all college students do not borrow any books from the campus library during the school year. Half of the books circulated by college libraries, he found, are taken out by about 20 per cent of the student body. Asheim said that "students with higher scholastic ratings tend to do more 'free' read ing. The student on the lower end of the scholastic scale, al though he often does quite a bit . of the assigned reading, does almost no non-curricular reading on his own." Scientific Method Commenting further on the Pavlovian principles of psy chiatry used in Russia, Dr. Serban explained that the So viet psychiatrist must use sci entific methods to establish a balance of forces between the individual and the state in order to recuperate the sick citizen for society.' The psychiatrist must never admit that the patient's con flict is caused by the social organization, the scientist ex plains in the Journal of Am erican Medical Association (Aug. 1). In Russia, a child's upbring ing, education by the school, literature, radio and televi sion, and social life are direct ed to form conditioned reflex es in supporting the aims of the state and stimulating the individual to them. Even the instinctual drive is channeled according to the needs of the state, Dr. Serban says. Woman Depressed For instance, a 28-year-old woman was admitted to a Russian hospital because she was very depressed. The wo man had had a normal child hood and became an engineer. While in college, she fell in love with and married an ar my officer. At the end of her college career she was sent to a plant hundreds of miles from her home, which separated her from her husband. She. began to doubt her love for her hus band. She felt isolated and alone and became very sad. Her work, in her opinion, was not efficient and she was told that she delayed production. Moon Field Ciirbs Satellite's Life Cambridge, Mass. (Science Service) The lifetime of the recently . launched "paddle wheel" satellite, powered by solar batteries, will be re duced to only two years, due to effects of the moon's gravi tational field. Without this lunaj, effect, Explorer VI would stay In orbit more than 20 years, Dr. Yoshihide Kozai of the Smith sonian Astrophysical Observ atory here has calculated. Astronomers call the irreg ularities in the motion or orbit of a heavenly body caused by some force other than that determining its usual path "perturbations." Since Explorer VTs orbit takes it out more than 25,000 miles from the earth at its farthest point, or apogee, the satellite's motion is affected by the moon. This, in turn, will affect the perigee, or lowest point to earth in its orbit, drawing the satellite down into the earth's atmos phere and thus significantly increasing the drag. The moon's average distance from the earth is . about 240,000 miles. Explorer VI is the first earth satellite to have its orbit appreciably perturbed by the moon. The sun's attraction adds a small contribution to the shortening of this object's lifetime. Dr. Charles A. Whit ney, also of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, performed the detailed num erical calculations of Dr. Kozai's perturbation equations using a high speed electronic computer.
