Wall Street Chatter New York -IUPD - You're the only one who can protect yourself from being defraud ed by phony stock brokers. "There is no law broad enough or no agency ade quately equipped to protect those who will not use just ordinary caution in parting with their hard earned money," says New York state Attorney General Louis J. Lefkowitz. His office has formulated a 10-foot guide to follow when buying stocks: Think before buying; deal only with established firms; be skeptical of securities of fered on the telephone from any firm or salesman you do not know; guard against high pressure sales; beware of promises of quick price rises; be sure you understand the risk of loss as well as the prospect of gain. Freight Wagons Start Journey Silverton - . (UPD - "Fast freight" service began Sun day between Silverton and Portland. But it wasn't as fast as you might think. Two freight wagons were pulled out of Silverton by a four-horse hitch on the first leg of the Silver "D" Wagon Freight Service to Portland. The four and one-half day round trip journey will have overnight stops at Mt. Angel, Canby, and Milwaukie on the way to Portland. Overnight stops are planned near Ore gon City and Woodburn on the return jaunt. The wagons are due in Silverton Friday about noon on the return. Horses pulling the wagons are owned by Tony DeSantis, Silverton Hills berry rancher. DeSantis said the wagon would arrive at the S. and M. Freight terminal in Portland sometime Wednesday morning. Residents to Hear Sonic Booms More Frequently in Area (Editor's note: This is the second in a series of articles on the sonic boom. The ma terial was furnished by the Air Force at Kingsley field, Klamath Falls.) By MSGT. CHARLES J. BENNETT Kingsley Field Sonic Booms - nuisance or necessity? Nuisance, say many house holders who have been awak ened from sleep and have seen dishes dance on cup board shelves because of the thunderous roar of a sonic boom. Necessity, say Air FoEce officials whose mission is to defend America from attack. Both viewpoints, actually, are correct. Sonic booms are a nuisance, but America's freedom would be in jeopardy if they were never heard again. Aerial Protection The Air Force is charged with the task .of providing aerial protection to this coun try and insuring continued freedom in consonance with our American way of life. MERCURY MEDFORD MOTORS, INC. 225 SOUTH RIVERSIDE superior air vehicles tech nology can provide. More and more supersonic aircraft are entering the operational in ventory of the Air Force. These aircraft, capable of supersonic speeds in all flight altitudes, are creating an in creasing number of sonic booms all over the country. Because the Ashland, Grants Pass and Medford area lies between Kingsley field and the Pacific coast, residents will frequently hear the roar of the F-101B Voodoos as they scramble to intercept an un identified aircraft approach ing the coast. The sonic boom, occuring without warning, produces a startling, explosive sound which causes the public to be come increasingly aware of the Air Force activities. Carry Out Mission - Responsive to the public which it defends, the Air Force continuously attempts to carry out its missions with the least possible disturbance to the people. However, the world's best Air Force cannot be maintained if its pilots must fly all missions at sub sonic speeds and then some day, when the chips are down, fly their aircraft on actual missions for the first time at supersonic speeds. Some of the sonic booms created by supersonic aircraft will be 10 times louder than thunder. The loudest thunder clap recorded generated a pressure of about one -half pound per square foot. And when people hear a noise that loud they immediately begin looking for damage - broken windows, cracked plaster, shattered brie a brae. In tests, where airplanes have dived from 35,000 feet and pulled out at 25,000 feet scientists have measured pres sure no greater than 5 points per square foot on the ground. Even when the aircraft de scends to 10,000 feet before pulling out of its dive the re corded pressure did not reach 10 pounds per square foot. Rarely are faster-than-sound operations carried out at alti tudes lower than 20,000 feet. This would mean that sonic boom pressures no greater than 5 pounds per square foot are expected to be felt on the ground. Observe Effects Scientists and engineers observing the effects of shock waves generated by atomic explosions have never observ ed structural damage to the flimsiest of test structures at pressure less than 70 pounds per square foot. Applying simple arithmetic, this is 65 pounds more than the pres sure normally observed from a sonic boom. To further test the effects of a sonic boom, a small vil 1 a g e christened Boomtown, USA, was built in the Mojave Desert in California. Super sonic jets from the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps broke the sound barrier over the village at altitudes from 40, 000 to 10,000 feet. The jets later demonstrated the dif ference between a sonic boom and the "cut-in" of an after burner. News media representatives along with civilian and serv ice observers examined the village in its entirety at the completion of the tests. They discovered that neither the structures nor the household objects had suffered any form of damage. The village in cluded two small buildings having plaster walls and glass windows, a concrete patio and a cinder block wall. Inside the buildings were a televis ion set, two radios, all oper ating during the tests, dishes, figurines, glass and crystal pieces and lighting fixtures. No Damage Noted Nothing suffered damage despite the repeated dives and creation of sonic booms when breaking the sound barrier. As to injuries to persons, the experts point out no sonic boom pressure is strong enough to injure anyone -but the noise certainly can play hob with your nerves. The people expect the best possible protection for their homes, families, and country. The Air Force is providing 24-hour-a-day, 365 day-a-year protection in all kinds of weather. This responsibility is accepted with the full knowledge of the cost of fail ure. Air Force personnel are citizens of this country dedi cated to accomplishing this job of vital importance. Every effort is made by the Air Force to spare the citizens of this country from being startled by this disturb ance to the greatest possible extent. However, as long as the need exists for continuous air surveillance of our coun try to prevent possible foreign intrusion, sonic booms may be heard from time to time in all parts of our nation. The sonic boom is assurance that the Air Force is on the job and is carrying out its responsibility to train, equip, and maintain a force capable of assuring continuous aerial protection of this country from attack. BARKER'S WILL BE CLOSED TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY WHAT IS PARK & SHOP? ANSWER: Park and Shop has been in operation in over 100 cities in the United States. It is made available by the downtown businesses and professional peoples of Medford in an honest effort to provide a convenient place for the motoring public to park. It will eliminate the worry about time limits and other disturbing factors while conducting all of their business in the downtown area. QUESTION: Who is eligible to use the Park and Shop lots? ANSWER: Everyone. QUESTION: How does Park and Shop Work? ANSWER: Park your car in any lot displaying the Park and Shop sign; ths. attendant will issue you a ticket showing the time parked. Take that parking ticket with you when conducting your business or pleasure in the downtown area. All places of business displaying the park and shop emblem, which is the majority of the business in the downtown area, will place a stamp on your parking ticket; this stamp is good for one hour. of free parking. If the clerk forgets the stamp he will greatly appreciate it if you will ask him for one. QUESTION: Why bother with Parking tickets and Stamps by both the places of business and the motoring public? ANSWER: There is considerable expense in making the Parking lots available and maintaining them with an attendant; all participating busi nesses wish to share that expense on the benefit basis. They buy the stamps from a central place, the Chamber of Commerce, acts as a clearing house; when you get your stamp, you have completed the cycle. The business that does the larger amount, of business gives out the greater number of stamps and thus pays according to benefit received. That is why a minimum purchase is required so that one or two stores won't provide the stamps for everyone, because they are conveniently located to the lots, etc. So, be sure to get a free parking stamp at each Park & Shop store you trade at. QUESTION: Is the parking free? ANSWER: It is not the intent to have the Parking lots for a select few, but to be available to everyone. It is the desire of all participating busi ness establishments to make the parking free to the public while shopping (as above explained) but those that are not shopping may ask the courteous attendant on the lot and he will be glad to explain the reasonable rates, and make your stay as pleasant as possible.
