The geneticists who spend their days studying the inheritance of disease are constantly using the word. What is it and what does it mean? The word is penetrance and it means that with some hereditary diseases, due to what is called a dominant gene, 100 per cent of the persons who get the gene get the disease. In another disease, only half of the persons who get the gene get the disease. In this case, the penetrance is 50 per cent. The hopeful as pect of this fact for millions of persons with a poor heredi ty is that if they should get the bad gene, they still might not even show, signs of the disease. A Decline In Appendectomies I was glad to read in the American Medical Associa tion NEWS that three doctors, writing in the Archives of Surgery, found that in 1956, in this country, only half the number of appendectomies were performed as were per formed in 1951. Most physi cians, would probably agree that the rate for chronic ap pendicitis in adults could be still much lowced without doing any harm. Many doc tors today wonder if there is any such disease as "chronic appendicitis." A Thought For Courage When some great sorrow, like a mighty river, Flows through your life with peace-destroying power And dearest things are swept from sight forever, Grange News... Griffin Creek Grange Griffin Creek Grange met at the Grange hall Aug. 13 with Master Herman Kamp ing presiding. All of the officers were not present but by the use of pro terns the business was trans acted. The Grange building had recently been painted and the members passed a bill for payment to the painter. Because of the small at tendance, refreshments were served in the kitchen, near the source of supply, and a nice visit and get-together was enjoyed. The next meeting, on Aug. 27, will be Grange visitation night and the Griffin creek Grange will host the Granges of the county. Plans were made for that event. Scientists estimate that the world will use five times as much energy in the year 2000 as it does today. 8:30 Alfred Hitchcock 9:00 Flight 930 State Trooper 10.-00 21 Beacon Street 1030 News 1035 Sign Off MONDAY 10:00 Love of Life 10:45 Guiding Light ll:0O waiter cronkite 11.-05 Morning Matinee 1230 is the World Turns 1 :00 For Better or Worse 1 30 B ouse Party 2:00 Bit; Payoff 230 Verdict Is Yours 3:00 Bri,nter Day 3:15 Sect t Storm 330 Edgs of Nieht 4 0 American Bandstand 430 Molly 5:00 Chap tain's Corner 5:15 Doug Edwards 5:30 Huckleberry Hound 6:00 Weatner 6:05 Newr 6:15 Doug Edwards 630 Name That Tun 7:00 The Texan 730 Father Knows Best 8:00 Fashion Show 830 Joseph Cotten 9:00 Desilu Playnouse . 10:00 Rawhide 11:00 Lat:e News 11:05 Sign Off WALT'S TV & RADIO SERVICE Oldest Shop is Southern Oregon 409 E.
