H e wonders if he should now do Alvaret some i n i n g about it. Because this symp tom is so typically that of cancer of the large bowel or of the outlet of the stomach, the man should have gone im mediately .to have his stomach and bowel x-rayed, and his rectum looked into with a lighted tube. To wait for six months after such a symptom appears is to invite disaster. Why? Because now, if a can cer is found it is likely to have scattered, and invaded the liv er, from which it cannot be removed. I can sympathize deeply with the man who says that he did not dare go to a doctor because he and his wife are living on small social security payments. Because of the man's great danger and the ur gency of his problem, I im agine that the social service woman in any nearby big hos pital would arrange to have him x-rayed without charge. If, in his city, there is no agency to help people like this Farmers Leading Arthritis Victims New York - (Science Serv ice) - Farmers are almost twice as apt to get arthritis as city dwellers. One million of the estimat ed 11,000,000 arthritis suffer ers in the United States are farmers or farm laborers, the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation here reports. This figure, it said, is far out of proportion to the size of the farm population. Why farmers are more prone to this crippling dis ease is not yet known, but several possible reasons have been suggested. One of these might be the greater amount of time the farmer spends out of doors than the urbanite. A recent National Health Education committee study revealed that, during winter months, there are two arthritis cases among outdoor workers for every one case among indoor workers. Another reason may be the hard physical labor perform ed by farmers. Also, physical strain and injury, more apt to occur to a farmer, might "trigger" an attack of arthritis. 4 -stSfei-- 1 1 i Dr. IUUW Gal. for WHILE SUPPLY LASTS! 217 West 6h Phone SP 3-6445 R. Maya Citato man, there is something de cidedly wrong with the com munity. One of the difficul ties today facing many old people is that they can get along all right on their small income so long as they remain well. But if one of them breaks a hip or gets a cancer, then disaster will stare them in the face. Danger Signals Not Known There is one thing that is decidedly wrong" with millions of people in this country, and that is, they do not know the danger signals of serious di sease. Many worrisome people constantly are running to a doctor, when they do not need to. They may be mudh fright ened by a few missing heart beats, which usually are harm less, or they are excited about a slightly rapid pulse, or jit tery spells, or harmless 20-minute-long spells of fuzzy vision, due to migraine, or spells of hysterical air-gulping and belching due to fright, or spells of frequency Of urin ation by day and not by night -due to anxiety. For these harmless things they run to a doctor and take a lot of his time - sometimes to his disgust; but when their bowel stops moving, after the age of 60, or when they start bleeding from some body ori fice, or when at the age of 70, for the first time in their life they get a severe pain in the stomach, or when they get a pain in the chest which comes when they try to walk fast along the street, they don't know that they should run to a doctor. It was because of this sort of thing that a while ago I wrote a booklet called "Dan ger Signals," designed to tell people when they must go quickly for medical help, and when they don't have to. (UPD The first sit-down strike in Amer ica took place in 1886 at Coal Hill, according to the Arkan sas Publicity and Parks com mission. During the early days of the Arkansas penitentiary system, convicts were leased to private contractors in ag riculture and industry. The convicts had to work long hours without pay and were treated harshly. The sit down strike occurred when a number of them working for a contractor in a coal mine sat down in the tunnels and refused to leave. The sit downers erected barricades, killed the car mules for food and fashioned a crude cannon from iron pipe. They loaded the cannon with scrap metal and blasting powder and dared anyone to enter the mine. After 18 days, the various demands of the sit-down-strikers for better treatment were metf and a subsequent investigation brought the abolishment of the system of leasing prisoners.
