Woman Who Disturbed By Denver (LTD A Denver woman who swallowed a live mouse last Friday says she never would have gone to the hospital if she had known it would have caused so much "commotion." Mrs. Florence Hill said she has been deluged with tele phone calls and stacks of mail from all over the country, most of it wanting to know if the story were actually true. Might Be Different "If I were a young person, it might be different," she said indignantly "but a woman 67 years old isn't going to be tell ing lies like this." : "I would have been a little more strategic if I had wanted H O II TA Y t i t i. i, ... V I DAH O 1 QUAKE THREATENS DAM This southwestern area of Montana has been wracked by a series of earth tremors, registering m magnitude as high as 7.8 on the Rkhter scale. In comparison, the earthquake that shattered San Francisco, Calif., in 1906, was recorded at 8.25. The shocks were centered in the Yellowstone Park area, but the earth quivered as far north as British Columbia, Canada. Some 600 residents were evacuated from the town of Ennis, 50 miles down the Madison River from Hebgen Dam, which was badly cracked by the shocks and threatens to break. The Family Council Editor's note: The Family Counci. consists of a Judge, a psychiatrist, three clergymen, a newspapei editoi a women's editor and two writers. Each article is a summary of an actual report. The Family Council does not (It advice: it merely reports on problems that have been dealt with by responsible agencies and counselors. Betty R. Mother makes me look like a sap. Mrs. N. R. - You've got to blow your own horn in this world. . Betty R. - I am IS and I'm very unhappy at home, main ly because of my mother. She embarrasses me by always showing off. I happen 'to be good at art. I like to paint and have had my things in some exhibitions. I won a few honorable men tions, but never a top prize. Whenever one of my things gets sent to an exhibition my mother runs around telling all of her friends, neighbors and relatives about it. Then when I don't win, she shoots her mouth off about the prize must have been fixed and my picture was certainly the best. My mother makes me look like a first class sap. Soon I won't be able to hold up my head in. public. Mrs. N. R. - Betty is en- A r 1 A. 1 3 nM J r.'U-a I was that way when-1 was her age and since then I've learned that you've got to blow your own horn in this world or nobody will even notice you. I know that Betty has talent and that's certainly nothing to be afhamed of. Plenty of youngsters without nearly as much ability get written up in their local papers and go on to do big things in life. I don't know why that daughter of mine should be ashamed to hold up her head. She won't let me hang her pictures around the house. She wants them in her room only. Why. make a secret of it? I'm proud of her. Should n't I be? The Council: At the rate she is going, Mrs. N. R. stands an excellent chance of killing whatever talent Betty has. This mother has placed en tirely too much emphasis on Betty's abilities and we can sympathize with Betty's with drawal from this unpleasant limelight. In effect, Mrs. N. R. is really taking all the glory for her self. She has produced Betty and now Betty is turning out to be a superior production. rnis Kjna ot parental pnae is understandable, but it must be held in check if the child is to feel any pride in himself. Betty will naturally feel pride in her accomplishments if she can feel they are for Swallowed So Much Commotion to stir up all the publicity I have been given." The "publicity" started the day after her pet dog, Boots, awakened her from her sleep with his growling. She looked up and saw a two-inch mouse jumping around near her bed. Mouse Jumped In She said it was standing on top of her clock. She opened her mouth to scream and the mouse jumped in and wriggled its way down her throat. The next day one of her friends persuaded her to go to Denver General Hospital. Mrs. Hill said she stayed at the hospital for 12 hours. Doc tors admitted they were amaz ed at her story but said they had no reason - to doubt it. They kept her hospitalized " - Vs'"" n'"""1'' ' "'iV'tfA N fi FORKS and by herself. Her impulse to keep her pictures in her own room is a natural one in view of her mother's excessive horn-blowing. The business about com plaining about the results of a competition is particularly un fortunate. It makes Betty ap pear to be a poor sport among the youngsters of her own age - and these are the people whose approval means most to her at this time. When all these unpleasant associations are added up in Betty's emo tional ledger, she will lose her pleasure in drawing and painting. Mrs. N. R. would do better to seek some public glory en tirely for herself and let her daughter develop her own abilities in quiet. The girl's talent is evidently so strong that it requires only moderate amounts of the nourishment of praise. (Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.) Grange News Live Oak Grange At the last meeting of Live Oak Grange the following can didates were obligated in the first and second degrees: John Lucker, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin and Robert Rowlison. The agriculture report by Ray Frantz noted beef prices are steady and feeders fairly high. Legislative Chairman Frank Hall spoke on the new labor law. HEC Chairman displayed the new Christmas card sam ples and announced no meet ing of the HEC in August. A letter from Larry Shee han thanking the Grange for its cooperation in making a success of the dinner for "The Man of the Year" held in Rogue River recently was read. Permission was granted for the Bloodmobile " to use the dining room Sept. 16. The lecture program con sisted of group singing; a read ing of part of the state mas ter's address to the 1959 ses sion of the State Grange by the lecturer; and members told what the Grange stands for. At the next meeting, Aug. 27, the third and fourth de grees will be exemplified. Refreshments were served by Dr. and Mrs.' Edward Chance and Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Miller. - Live Mouse but when she suffered no ill effects they sent her home. No More Mice The next day she said her telephone started ringing. "I find the entire affair hideous and at the same time comical," the widow said, "but I never want to see another mouse again as long as I live.
