The Medical Myasthenia Gravis At a recent symposium on myasthenia gravis a new drug, phospholine iodide, was re ported to have shown prom ise in reduc ing the weak ness of the pa- ts with disease. The report was made by Kermit Osserman, hen, and Gabriel Genkins, of Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York. At the same meeting it was reported that a Paris surgeon, Dr. Andre Thevenard (who recently died) denervated a little nerve center in the neck, called the carotid sinus. He 'said that four patients so treated had been cured, and 10 had been helped. This worked only in young men; it did not work in women. At a meeting in Brussels, Dr. J. E. Desmedt, of the Uni versity of Brussels, reported that by giving a special chem ical which intereferes with the synthesis in nervous tis sue of a substance called acet ylcholine, one can produce in cats a disease resembling my asthenia gravis. If this dis covery is confirmed, there may be a breakthrough in the way of finding a cure for the disease. How Dangerous Are Cousin Marriages? Recently, there appeared a valuable article by Jean Sut ter, in a Paris Journal of Med ical Biology. As he said, it has always been hard to find out how harmful in-breeding is in man, because to deter mine this one must study large numbers of families, and one must know what sort of stock is in them. Sutter studied a total of 1445 "normal" fami lies with 4094 children, and 804 "inbred" families with 2256 children. The inbred children had to be divided in to three categories, depending on the degree of relationship between the parents. The more interesting findings were that the percentage of sterile families is higher among the inbreds. A possible explana tion for this may be that the inbred people feared to have children, and hence avoided this. The numbers of families with many children who died early, or with abnormal chil dren, or with abnormal chil dren who were born dead or died soon afterwards, was higher among the inbred fami lies. There were some inbred families with many abnormal children. It would seem, therefore, that the old-folk idea that in breeding can be bad has a foundation in fact. The big point for a man to remember when he wants to marry his first cousin is that if their stock is free of bad defects, the danger of having abnor mal children will be small, but if the stock is poor, some of their children are likely to bring great sorrow to them. Genetics, An Exact Science Most people don't like the idea that we human beings inherit our physical and men tal demerits and diseases from our ancestors just as we in herit our abilities, either physical or mental. But wheth er we like it or not, genetics is becoming more and more an exact science. Like all the exact sciences, the law can be worked out in remarkable de tail with the help of mathe matics. I recently read that in Sydney, Australia, scientists at the university recently used one of the new ultra-rapid electric-computer to fore tell exactly what would hap pen if certain fruit flies were bred together. The results prophesied by the computer were very close to those ob tained later by experimenta tion.
