Sam Jones (15-10) was scheduled to start for San Francisco against Larry Jack son (9-10) in the opener of a 19-game invasion through the Middle West and East. They checked out of San Francisco Sunday bolstered by a 4-3. victory over Cincin nati which-big Orlando Ce peda achieved in the 10th in ning by socking a home run off Don Newcombe. "I heet a fas ball," the tawny slugger said afterward. And during the day he also ' laced out a double and hit a ; single while helping end New combe's spell over the Giants. At game time, the big" right hander had beaten San Fran cisco four times this year without a. loss and gone the distance each time. T Berra Lashes Home Run 300 New York-OJPD-Yogi Berra Is the first catcher and 16th player in major league his tory to join the 300-homer club. Berra hit the 300th homer of his career with two out in the ninth inning of Sunday's nightcap with" Kansas City to send the game into overtime. Other active major leag uers who have hit 300 hom ers are Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Duke Snider and Gil Hodges. The White Sox, of course, almost always have gotten fine pitching while San Fran cisco's hurling has been the team's big question mark. Now, however, Jack Sanford has come along to bolster the Giant staff and it may be that he'll help just enough in the stretch to spell f-l-a-g. Both front-runners "in creased their leads Sunday, the White Sox boosting their American league margin, to James Heads Area In Pin Semi-Final Orville James, Ashland, rolled a 1330 with handicap to claim top honors in the southern area semi-finals of the Oregon Bowling Proprie tors tournament. The area semis were at Medford Bowling lanes with 11 of the 115 keglers taking part Saturday and Sunday gaining berths in next week end's finals at Roseburg. Gertie Riggs, Medford, was second in the competition here with 1323. She is be lieved to be the only woman to qualify for the state finale. A prize of $1,000 will go to the state champion. Others to qualify for the Roseburg session were Bud Fisher, Medford, 1282; John Donovan, Myrtle Creek, 1281; Gambler Sought In Fight Probe New York - (UPD - Police sought one reputed big-time gambler today in connection with the Ingemar Johansson- Floyd Patterson fight promo tion, and another widely known gambler was scheduled to testify today before the I grand jury investigating the promotion. District Attorney Hogan s office disclosed that Gilbert Lee Beckley, said to be a pro fessional gambler of Surfside, Fla.r and Fort Mitchell, Ky., apparently had fled to Ha vana, thereby evading a New York detective and assistant district attorney who had gone to Miami to get him as a wit ness. Meanwhile, Frank Erickson -a convicted gambler and bookmaker who was once esti mated to have run a $10,000, 000 a year wagering business out of New Jersey locations was scheduled to appear as a witness before the grand jury. .. 1 41 -it m Pitches Cepeda, three games by whipping the Washington Senators, 4-3 and 9- 0, and the Giants increasing their lead to IV2 games in the National league with a 4-3, 10- inning win over the Cin cinnati Reds. Gerry Staley pitched shut out ball for 4 13 innings to win the opener for the White Sox and then Early Wynn fired a three-hitter for his 15th victory of the season and the 264th of his career. San ford, meanwhile, turned in his fourth straight victory with a powerful five-hitter. The Baltimore Orioles aid ed the White Sox cause by knocking off the second-place Cleveland Indians, 4-3, and Bob Reid, Roseburg, 1269; Kermit Sheets, Klamath Falls, 1264; Roger Weiss, Med ford, 1264, and Barney Root, lamath Falls, 1262. Dodgers Slate 17-Game Jaunt Los Angeles-(UPD -The Los Angeles Dodgers, narrowly missing the season's biggest comeback, start out tomorrow on a 17-game road trip ex pected to decide their chances in the three-way National league pennant fight. The Dodgers dropped 'an 8-7 decision to the Milwaukee Braves before a crowd of 29,- 234 at the Coliseum in the final game of a home stand that saw them hold their second position behind San Francisco. But the defeat, coupled with the Giants' triumph over Cincinnati, chopped a game off their advantage over third place Milwaukee and dropped them VA games behind the Giants. The Dodgers open the road trip Tuesday against Chicago, with either Johnny Podres (9-7) or Sandy Koufax, (5-2), scheduled to pitch. The Cubs nominated either Glenn Hob bie (11-9) or Art Cicarelli, (4-1). "We're 'in good condition physically," said Manager Walt Alston after Sunday's hectic duel with the Braves. Although Carl Furillo's re turn to regular service still is indefinite, the Dodgers will get Gil Hodges back at first base in Chicago and both Kou fax and Danny McDevitt looked sharp in relief against Milwaukee Sunday. Bears Nab Lead Again United Press International The Yakima Bears Sunday turned Eugene's first place position in the Northwest League into a one night stand. Yakima surged back into first place by taking both ends of a double header, 3-0 and 8-2, from the Emeralds The losses dropped Eugene, which had taken the lead only the night before, back into a tie with Lewiston for the number two spot. In other action Sunday Lewiston won the first game of a double header 8-7 from Tri-City only to have the Braves bounce back for a 6-1 decision in the second game. Wenatchee and Salem split a twin bill with the Chiefs win ning the first game 4-3 and the Senators taking the night cap 6-4. OREGON CITY WINS Portland (UPD Oregon City won the Oregon Connie Mack league baseball title Sunday night with a 7-2 win over Eugene. Eugene won the first game of a twin bill 4-0. Oregon City defeated Eugene Saturday night 7-3. v Giants to Lynch Homer the Milwaukee Braves helped the Giants by downing the second place Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-7. Yanks Knot at Third The New York Yankees went into a third-place tie with Baltimore by winning a marathon doubleheader from the Kansas City Athletics, 4-3 and 3-2, and the Detroit Tig ers beat the Boston Red Sox, 7-3, in other AL games. Relief ace Elroy Face won his 15th straight game as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, and the Philadelphia Phillies whipped the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-3 and 4-2, in other NL games. The; White Sox won their 27th One-run decision when Jim Landis singled, a wild pitch by Dick Hyde and an error by Roy Sievers enabled them to snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning of the first game. Earl Torgeson drove in three runs with two singles and a sacrifice fly and Nel son Fox and Wynn each had two hits in the nightcap for the White Sox. Harmon Kil lebrew hit his 35th homer for Washington. Orlando Cepeda homered in the 10th inning to give San Francisco the victory after Jerry Lynch's 15th homer tied the score in the ninth. It was the fourth straight vic tory for Sanford since recov ering from a fractured hand suffered on June 11. The loss went to Don Newcombe. Milt Pappas, brilliant 20-year-old right hander, scored his 12th victory for the Orioles when two Cleveland errors proved Jim Perry's un doing. The Orioles pushed over the winning run after two out in the seventh when Bob Boyd singled, Joe Gins berg walked and George Strickland let Brooks Robin son's grounder go. through him for an error. Braves Lead 8-0 Joe Adcock's three - run homer and Ed Mathews' two run circuit clout enabled the Braves to pile up an 8-0 lead but Bob Buhl finally needed ninth-inning relief help from Don McMahon to win his 9th game. Hank Aaron, Bill Bru ton and Felix Mantilla con tributed two hits each to the Milwaukee attack while Wal ly Moon had three hits and Duke Snider had two includ ing a homer for Los Angeles. .Gil McDougald singled with the bases filled and two out to win the 14-inning opener for the Yankees and then El ston Howard walloped a hom er to take the 11-inning night cap. Yogi Berra homered with two out in the ninth to send the second game into over time after Russ Snyder's first major league homer gave the Athletics a 2-1 lead in the eighth. Relievers Ryne Duren and Bobby Shantz were the Alex Still Rates High San Francisco - (UPD - Alex Olmeda, who stands accused of blowing two tennis matches this year in moments of pique, still rates high enough with the USLTA brass 4o be re named to the Davis Cup squad. The erratic Peruvian was selected last Saturday along with Earl Buchholz of St. Louis, Barry MacKay of Day ton, O., and Bernard (Tut) Bartzen of Dallas. Challenge round competition for the Cup will take place Aug. 28 30 at Forest Hills. Philadelphia - A u s t ralia clinched its inter-zone Davis Cup title with Italy when Neale Fraser and Roy Emer son downed Nicola Pietran geli and Orlando Sirola, 3-6, 11-9, 6-3, 9-7 in the doubles competition, delayed one day by rain. ADAMS ASSUMES DUTIES West Point, N. Y.-(UPD-Col. Emory S. Adams Jr., named to. succeed Earl Red Blaik as Army athletic director last fall, assumes his new duties today. Col. And he also is fourt short of Carl Hubbell's 24 straight wins achieved at the close of the 1936 season and the beginning of the 1937 campaign. Ed Bouchee's ninth-inning grand slam proved the clinch er as Gene Conley won his 11th game of the year for the Phillies who then completed a sweep by rallying for two runs in the ninth inning of the nightcap. Dave Philley singled home the tie-breaking run in the second game and another run tallied on George Anderson's sacrifice fly.
