17-Game Jaunt
Los Angeles-(UPD -The Los
Angeles Dodgers, narrowly
missing the season's biggest
comeback, start out tomorrow
on a 17-game road trip ex
pected to decide their chances
in the three-way National
league pennant fight.
The Dodgers dropped 'an
8-7 decision to the Milwaukee
Braves before a crowd of 29,-
234 at the Coliseum in the
final game of a home stand
that saw them hold their
second position behind San
Francisco.
But the defeat, coupled
with the Giants' triumph over
Cincinnati, chopped a game
off their advantage over third
place Milwaukee and dropped
them VA games behind the
Giants.
The Dodgers open the road
trip Tuesday against Chicago,
with either Johnny Podres
(9-7) or Sandy Koufax, (5-2),
scheduled to pitch. The Cubs
nominated either Glenn Hob
bie (11-9) or Art Cicarelli,
(4-1).
"We're 'in good condition
physically," said Manager
Walt Alston after Sunday's
hectic duel with the Braves.
Although Carl Furillo's re
turn to regular service still is
indefinite, the Dodgers will
get Gil Hodges back at first
base in Chicago and both Kou
fax and Danny McDevitt
looked sharp in relief against
Milwaukee Sunday.
