In a recent n u m b e r of Life Maga zine, she re ports her ex perience with Park inson's disease, which slowly but steadily had stiffened her i muscles until it had made Alvarez it almost impossible for her to handle her cameras or to write her reports on a type writer. She tells of the difficulties of walking when one is so stiff that one's arms cannot swing normally, and when one feels like the leaning tower of Pisa. She tells of finding it almost impossible to put her left hand in a pocket and there to retrieve something. Exercising under the guidance of a physical therapist helped some, but not enough. Arrest of Anglers In Oregon Angers Washingtonians Ilwaco, Wash. - (UPD - Local fishermen were fighting mad today over arrests of Wash ington residents by Oregon state police at the mouth of the Columbia river. Eight persons were arrested over the week end, seven of thjm from the state of Wash ing on. State Police Sgt. Wal ter Hershey said the arrests were made for fishing in Ore gon waters without an Oregon license. Local residents question the extent of Oregon's jurisdiction i and whether police have a right to board a boat without a warrant or the owner's per mission. Law Cited Sergeant Hershey said Ore gon's search and seizure law gives officers the right to ex amine the document required. He also said the line marking the boundary to Oregon wa ters has been set by joint ac tion of the two states and ratified by Congress. Two women picketed the Oregon side of the river Sun day. One sign read "Oregon unfair to Washington, shop in your own state." Another-said "Fishermen beware of the Oregon police trap when you fish." Must Hare License State police said anyone fishing Oregou waters must have a license, either for one day, seven days or for the sea son. Oregon also allows only two salmon per day instead of three for each fisherman. At a meeting . Saturday night local residents raised several hundred dollars to ob- ttain legal assistance for fish ! erman who were arrested. An average American eats about 25 pounds of poultry products per year. Medicine Then, Miss Bourke-White heard of Dr. Irving S. Cooper, of New York University and St. Barnabas' Hospital in New York City, who, for several years now has been develop ing an operation which helps perhaps eight out of 10 of the patients operated on, if they are well-chosen. He injects into a certain tiny spot in the brain a drop of alcohol. The patient is awake at the time so that he or she can tell the doctor if he has hit the right place. As Miss Bourke-White says, during the operation, "I, was suddenly aware of an extra ordinary feeling. I just knew that the doctors were doing the right thing. I could tell by a kind of inner harmony, almost an ecstasy. The next few weeks were one continu ous Christmas, every second or third bringing its own gift. First, my left arm swung and ! swung and swung from the socket as if it wanted to take off on its own, like an ani mated baseball bat. Then my back began to straighten up, as the iron-stiff muscle bands gradually freed themselves. Walking again became a hap py thing." . Soon she learned to use her typewriter again, and to her great joy, again she was able to change the film in her cam ei$a. This was her greatest joy. Also, she found that when she put on a hospital gown, she could tie the laces at the back of her neck. Dur ing , her illness, this would have been almost impossible. As Miss Bourke-White says, the operation doesn't always work so perfectly, and in many cases, Dr. Cooper will not even attempt it, as when the patient is old and broken down, and mentally dulled. Rarely will Dr. Cooper oper ate on anyone over 65. Usual ly, the younger the patient, the better. The operation will not clear up a fogged brain. At most, it can stop tremor, and can take away some of the stiffness in the muscles. An other drawback is that it can help the tremor on only one side of the body. Sometimes the operation has to be per formed again to free up the muscles on the other side. Also, there are a few people who react badly, and there are a very few who do not survive the operation. It is wonderful that, at last, there is some hope for these unfortunate people with Par kinson's disease, but I must emphasize again, that people with a mentally-crippled, per haps somewhat confused, pre maturely aged, or incom petent, or weak, old father of 70, should not immediately get on a train to go to New York City. I hope all readers will remember that the oper ation can be performed only on youngish, persons who need relief largely for a bad hand-tremor or for great stiffness of their muscles.
