Si 30 Receive 60 Letter ITn337-39-50i Good () Advene Nelail MV55-59-81-89I The Medical PATIENT IS AFRAID It distresses me to keep get ting so many letters from good people all over the coun try who say the same thing -they were told by their doctor that they or a loved one had some disease; and when, in an agony of anxiety, they Dr. Alvares a s K. e a wnai the name meant in plain Eng lish; what was it due to; was it curable; woulc it last long; was it contagious; was a re search on the disease being done anywhere; would a change in diet help; would a change in climate help-their doctor said he had no time to answer all those questions, and walked away. Many a person writes me saying, 'I know you have no time to read or . answer the big' pile of letters that come in every' day, but please, please read and answer this one. I am so frantic to know what Huntington's Chorea is and if there is any hope for me and my children, but I don't dare ask my doctor; I am afraid to; he is so busy, and he gets so impatient with me." Some people get so angry about this they say they have started praying for the day when there will be Socialized Medicine in America and the doctor will be a slave of the state. Unfortunately. I am sure the situation would then be worse, because if we would have the tyye of socialized medicine they have in Eng land, tne doctor wouia nave onlv about five minutes to a patient, and so perhaps would not say even a word; nt would only -write a perscription and then his reDort to Washington in triplicate! He would r not have time in which to make even a diagnosis. But to izet back to our un- hanov situation here in the U.S.A. I cannot and I will not excuse it. As I travel about the- country lecturing to med ical societies, I keep beggmg mv fellow doctors, first to de vote more time to listening to' natients-to getting a good history, and then to thinking bit about it. Second. I beg the doctors to explain illness better to their patients - to use simple English words, and Ohio'a" state capitol at Co lumbus took 22 years to build. Third, in many a case what the doctor needs most to do is to take away fear, and to give the patient every possible encouragement. An ultrasonic testing device has helped electric utilities avert costly generator shut downs. A boiler tube inspec tor used during routine check ups can spot fpulty tubes be fore they fail, thus saving thousanis of dollars in forced furnace outages. It is estimat ed an unplanned outage cost $10,000 a day. The ultrasonic tester pin points boiler tubes that have fallen prey to hydrogen em brittlement and blistering. It does this by "seeing" inside the tube and distinguishing in ternal scale from true metal, reports Branson Ultrasonic Corporation here. It takes nature up to 1,000 years to produce topsoil.
