Moscow Subject to Elastic Earth Tides By JOSEPH MYLER United Press International Washington-dTB-Moscow is a throbbing, pulsating, not to say jumping city. Twice a day it rises straight up more than a foot and a half. This semi - daily perform ance is due to "elastic earth tides," according to Soviet Academician A. N. Nesmeya nov. Earth tides, like those of the sea, are caused by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. Nesmeyanov, president of the Soviet Academy of Sci ences, noted the effect of the earth tides on Moscow in an article published by Pravda on International Geophysical Year (IGY) research. The ar ticle has been translated and distributed here. New Method of Study Investigation of these rip ples in the planet's crust, Nes meyanov said, is "one of the comparatively new methods of studying the internal struc ture of the earth." "It is known," he said, "that in Moscow the tidal wave in 12 hours can reach 50 to 60 centimeters (1.65 to 1.98 feet). "This means that the whole city is raised in a vertical SERMON SUBJECT . Hard To Observe But the Crustal effect is much less apparent than the great liquid tides in the world's oceans and so may be hard to observe in its own right near the seashore. Study of earth tides during the IGY, Nesmeyanov said, "showed the importance of conducting observation at the points remote from oceans." This work, he suggested, could be done with special profit "in central Asia where the indirect effects caused by the shifting of the water masses of the oceans are not felt." . This and other "research done during' the IGY, he said, will lead to "substantial ex pansion of our knowledge of the earth." Forest Products Sales Top $2 Million Salem- (CPD -State Forester Dwight L. Phillips said Thurs day income from sale of for est products on state lands under jurisdiction of the State Forestry Department reached a total of $2,210,195 for the fiscal year ending June 30. Tillamook county kept its lead in total revenue pro duced with timber sales total ing $836,766. Most of this came from sale of fire-killed timber in the Tillamook burn. Other counties in the top brackets included Douglas with $297,401, Clatsop with $233,221, Lincoln with $171, 931 and Lane with $171,771. Income from sales in other counties included: Marion $164,809, Benton $97,888, Coos $57,810, Linn $49,210, Umatilla $36,121- Polk $28, 458 Washington $23,172, Clackamas $22,572, Jefferson $18,287, Lake $439, Klamath $150, Josephine $119 and Curry $64.
