Main Phone SP 3-4541 nounced as unfounded" and "simply not true" many of the charges leveled against the U.S. foreign aid program in Vietnam by Scnpps - Howard Staff Writer Albert M. Cole- grove. State department and aid officials appeared before a Senate foreign relations sub committee to answer the charges made by Colegrove in a recent series of dispatches. The officials said they were proud of the program. It has brought order to a very complicated situation, Arthur Z. Gardiner, chief of the aid mission to Vietnam, told the subcommittee headed by Sen. Mike Mansfield (ID-Mont.). Elbridge Durbrow, U.S. am bassador to Vietnam, describ ed the program in Vietnam as very effective" and said "I am proud of this program and the excellent . results obtain ed." Durbrow said the Viet namese regime of President Diem has been made economi cally and militarily stronger largely because of the pro gram. In Country 19 Days Leonard J. Saccio, deputy director of the International Cooperation Administrat ion, said Colegrove was in Viet nam 19 days but "never called on the mission director and never asked to see him." Nor, he sajd, did Colegrove contact Lt. Gen. Samuel T. Williams, head of the military assistance advisory group. The many erroneous and misleading statements could have been eliminated if Mr. Colegrove had been interested in factual reporting," "Saccio told the senators. Mansfield said in an open ing statement that he wanted to know whether the U. S. was getting its money s worth" in Vietnam. He em phasized that no one was "on trial" and that the subcom mittee would seek to avoid damaging innocent persons or U.S. foreign .policy. As for Colegrove's charge that the aid program was "outrageous" and "scanda lous" in Vietnam, Durbrow said the charge was "un founded" and had "so dam aged our position there" that a detailed denial was needed. Answers Specific Charges Colegrove wrote that there were only 300 trained tech nicians in Vietnam. Durbrow said there are more than 33, 000 engineers and technicians, most of them trained with U. S. aid. On other specific charges, Gardiner had this to say: -Colegrove alleged "hidden scandals" in the program. Had he taken the trouble to check his source he could have satisfied himself that there no sucii scandals," Gar diner said. -A charge that $446,000 entrusted to a Vietnamese major was not accounted for is "simply not true" and Cole grove could have established that by checking with aid mission auditors. -Charges that 14 radio tow ers had been bought that "no one had ever laid eyes" on was "most inaccurate." Gar diner said 10 towers original ly were bought locally and are in use by Radio Vietnam. Colegrove ma:- have confused these, Gardiner said, with 14 others purchased from Radio Corporation of America and "which I saw with my own eyes last. Friday." -A statement that 14 mil lion dollars in resettlement funds had not been accounted for was not correct. Accord ing to Gardiner, records show that reports were "satis factorily completed" On the funds and are available for inspection. i IN 1934 (25 Years Ago) WESTERN THRIFT mUVU J liVj Ka If M BROUGHT LOWER DRUG PRICES TO MED- M FORD. Mable won't accept the verdict. iviaDei v. i m going 10 ap peal to the highest courts! Rosemary R. . My older brother died last year after brief illness and left widow and four young chil dren. Shortly after the widow, Mable, accused my younger broth ,r of concealing some money her husband nan turned over to him for invest ment. My younger brother denied this and there was a lawsuit which he won. Mabel, however, has re fused to accept the judge's verdict and accuses our iam ily of trying to steal money from her and the children We are deeply hurt by these accusations, but we feel bad mostly for the children's sake. I have tried to patch things up because I want my nieces and nephewsi to know they have loyal relatives, but Mabel has been terribly stub- i born. Mabel D. Loyal relatives! That's a laugh. I know for a I fact that this money was turned over by my husband. I'm going, to appeal the case to the highest courts! Nobody can discourage me. My, law yer had advised me against it, but I'm going to find another lawyer and I'll follow this thing through to the end. These "loyal" relatives have all . banded together to keep this money that belongs to my children. My husband was not heavily insured and life is going to be hard for all of us. I'm going to have to go to work as soon as I can I find some reliable help in my I home. My husband did a lot for his sisters and brother, but they show no gratitude. v The Council: Possibly Ma bel is right in her idea about the money that is being with held from her. We believe, however, that she should make an attempt to be more Free! 75c Wash V Curl Shampoo when you buy $1.50 she $2.75 Valu Lanolin Plus SPECIAL!. MAGIC honest with herself on this score.. It is most unlikely that she was not given a fair trial. Her own lawyer is evidently satisfied on this score. Her case must be a poor one and she should try to recognize that she may have built it up too much in her own mind. Outside of the legal ques tions, Mabel should recognize that she may be depriving her children of more than money by pursuing this bitter battle with the people who represent their closest tie with their deceased father. Children brought up with out one parent feel .their loss very deeply. They cherish remembrances, anecodtes, me mentos ai vthing that keeps that parent alive in then-hearts. Close ties with their fath er's family can mean a great deal to 'the children in this case and Mabel is robbing them of something irreplace-1 RltlSF able if she persists in keeping I . alive a bitter family feud The fact that this family is trying to "patch things up" indicates that Mabel is wrong in her feeling that they do not -consider her children They are extending the hand of friendship to them and that will mean more and more as the years go on. If .Mabel is sincere in her belief about the money and is not merely trying to pro voke a feud, she will some how manage to keep the legal dispute separate from her personal relationships with her husband's family. It is possible to have a difference of opinion without making enemies. (Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.) TONICREAM CURL MAGIC HAIR SPRAY No l.aquer Big 15-oz.
