They were identified as Mr. and Mrs. Orville Ramkin and Howard St. Clair. They were aboard a boat owned by John Hartwig en route from Brook ings .to Port Orford. Off Cape Sebastian the mo tor of the boat stalled and they were swept toward shore by, heavy winds. They put out an anchor which caught in rocks about 100 yards from shore. Katharine R. Boucot, Utake Horie and Martin J. Sokoloff reported o n the study of 2 5 0 consecu t i v e cases of cancer origin ating in the bronchi, o r air tubes lead ing into the lungs. Usual ly, a cancer patient is sup Dr. Alvarez posed to be cured if he has survived for five years after the operation. In this series, 17 per cent of the patients operated on were alive after five years. The outlook was better than average for .pa tients who had been operated on before they got symptoms, and it was better for those who had a so-called squamous cell cancer. The authors sug gest that older persons go twice a year for an x-ray ex amination of the chest. This is the surest way of avoiding death from an cancer of the lung. When the tadpole-like embryos of salamanders are reared in water containing traces of chemical com pounds known as nitriles, they develop tumors and diseases of what is called the connective tissue. These di seases are the results of changes in the growth of the tadpoles. I am reminded of a story told about Faraday, the father of the electrical dynamo.
