The diffused silicon recti fier, used to change alternat ing current into direct cur rent, is said to be several hundred times smaller and lighter than old-type recti fiers. Developed by Clevite Tran sistor Products, the device can be used in airborne computer systems with 600-volt power supplies. It can handle up to 150 milliamps at 150 degrees centigrade. Marked Whales Yield Age Data London-(Science Service)-A male whale takes twice as long to reach sexual maturity as scientists had thought. Previous estimates of this age, based . largely on such things as counting the "rings" in whale bone or baleen, are in error, an Australian scien tist reports here. A study of two whales that had been marked several years ago has given scientists a "standard" for assigning whales a minimum age at ma turity, W. H. Dawbin of the University of Sydney says. When they were recently re examined it was possible to estimate maturity more ac curately. The minimum age for a mature male whale appears to be four years, the research says. The female may reach maturity earlier since the minimum age for that sex was estimated to be three years. With these ages as standards, researchers should now be able to use various organs for accurate estimations of a whale's age at maturity. Brainwashing Shot Studied by Scientists Urbana - Champaign, 111. - (Science Service)-The "shots" that the American serviceman receives in the future may in clude a psychological shot against propaganda and brain washing as well as the famil iar typhoid, tetanus or diph theria inoculations. Psycholo gists under the direction of Prof. William McGuire of the University of Illinois here are attempting to develop a meth od of immunizing against per suasion by gradually building up a resistance to propaganda as hayfever victims are given defense against pollen. The study is being made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Colorado ranks first in the nation in the production of molybdenum. (Science Service)-A tiny piece of bone that has been in the American Museum of Natural History in New York for 50 years has been identified by a Princeton University paleontologist here as being 35,000,000 years old. Thus, it is part of the old est : specimen yet discovered of a skull of the higher pri mates, the group that includes monkeys, apes and man. Measuring less than an inch in diameter, the bone was de posited in a quarry in Egypt in the Early Oligocene Age. It was found about 50 miles southwest of Cairo about a half century ago by an Ameri-can-Museum-sponsored expedi tion. Not until Princeton's Dr. Elwyn L. Simons recently ex plored a partially studied re search collection in the Ameri can Museum, however, was the importance of the bone fragment realized. Several scientists regard the find as a reinforcement of the belief that there were sev eral kinds of monkey-like ani mals living in Egypt in iearly Oligocene times, Dr. Simons reported. Doctors removed the first and fourth fingers of his right hand and a gland under his right arm to check the ravages of radiation burns and cancer suffered in years of research. Discovery Gave Nam In 1895, Grubbe suffered a mysterious burn and swelling of his left arm following work with platinum, electrical cur rent and a vacuum tube. A few weeks later, Wilhelm Roentgen announced discov ery of X-rays, capable of pene trating solid objects. The dis covery gave Grubbe a name for what had happened to him. The many operations and racking pain are the price Grubbe has paid for his 60 years of research. . But his experiments and study have given life and hope to thou sands of cancer sufferers. Attacks Joint Study In an interview Wednesday, however, a proposed summit meeting to organize joint war against cancer came under at tack from the stricken scien tist. Grubbe, author of more than 150 books and articles on X ray and cancer research, said he doubted whether such a conference between East-West physicians would reveal com plete findings. The "summit" health meet ing was proposed by Sen. Hu bert Humphrey (D-Minn.), head of the senate subcom mittee on reorganization and international organizations. S. Department of Agriculture has announced here. Before 1947, the use of cottonseed meal was limited because gossypol, a pigment contained in cottonseed, is toxic to poultry and swine. But scientists at the Agricul tural Research Service's southern laboratory at New Orleans found processing tech niques that lower the gossypol content but do not disturb th high protein level of the meal. Consequently, in 1958, cotton seed production stood at 300, 000 tons, with 200,000 tons feeding California poultry, the Department of Agricul ture stated.
