Chest X-Ray Clinic In Fifth Year at Med ford Hospital The chest x-ray clinic at Sacred Heart hospital, spon sored by the Jackson County Tuberculosis and Health . as sociation, is now in its fifth year of operation. .It is open weekly for the convenience of the public in securing chest x-rays. X-ray equipment for the clinic was purchased with Christmas Seal funds and the clinic is maintained by the nominal fees charged for the chest x-rays. Clerical help Is provided by volunteers from the Provi dence Guild of Sacred Heart hospital. Approximately 5 5 hours a month of volunteer service is given and many of the same people have worked regularly at the clinic since it opened. The association has expressed its appreciation for their help in maintaining this clinic as a service to the public. During the first six months of 1959, 1,660 persons have .visited the clinic, which is ap proximately 500 more than last year at this time. The films are read by radiologists for tuberculosis, heart, cancer Broasfer House -Opened in City Mr. and Mrs. Johnny L. Brown, formerly of Brookings, recently opened the Broaster House, 703 East Main st., Medford, former location of the Village Dairy Smith. The Broaster House, Brown said, specializes in broasted chicken, a new process of pres sure cooking with, a special machine developed by Flavor Fast Foods corporation, Rock ton, 111 Brown said chicken is cook ed in 6 minutes and has a crisp skin. It is the first such equipment in the Rogue val ley, although such machines are located at other West Coast cities. Brown formerly was assist ant manager with the U.S. National bank in Brookings, and previously was with the First National bank in Salem. They have three children, Douglas, 12; Lyndell, 8, and Michael, 7. Post Office Boxes Increase in Price . An increase in lock box rentals at the Medford post office has been announced by Moore Hamilton, postmaster. The increase resulted from a change in the postal level of the local post office, he said, because of the increased number of patrons and the increase : in business. The change became effective July 1. Number 1 boxes were in creased from $1.70 to $2.25 per quarter; number 2 boxes from $2.25 to $3; number 3 boxes from 3 to $4.50; num ber. 4 boxes from $4.50 to 6; and number 5 boxes from $6 to $7.50 per quarter. Hamilton said patrons have been asked for a slight addi tional payment on post office boxes. Payments may be made at the money order window or by mail, he said. Many grocery stores and restaurants are vol untarily making this a prac tice for their employees, and it is hoped that more of the latter groups will join in this program to safeguard the pub lic from tuberculosis. Band Concerts Set At Medford Park A concert by three school bands Wednesday, July 22, at the city park beside the Med ford library will close the five - week summer band school sponsored by the Med ford school system. Bands participating in the concert will be the grade school intermediate band with about 60 members at 7:30 p.m., the junior high school band of about 70 members at 8 pjn., and the high school concert band with about 70 members at 8:30 p.m. Irv Mirick, supervisor of instrumental music, was in charge of the summer recrea tion program this year. The public is invited to the concert. Influenza Cases Lead Disease List Forty-two cases of commun icable diseases were reported in Jackson county last week, according to Dr. A. Erin Merkel, public health physi cian. Leading .. the list were 27 cases of influenza. Thirteen were in Medford, 7 in Central Point, 4 in Shady Cove and 3 in Phoenix. Other cases of diseases were German measles, Medford 3, Phoenix 4, and Shady Cove and Central Point 2 each; measles, Medford 1; whoop ing cough, Medford 1; chicken pox, Medford 1; and pneu monia, Medford 1.
