Local Hospital Encourages Mother to Stay With Children By encouraging the mother of its smallest patients to re main at their children's bed side, Bogue Valley Memorial hospital is keeping abreast of the latest concepts of pedi atric hospital care. A recent article in a na- 1 1 o n a 1 pictorial magazine stresses the need for emotion al support in the pediatric 'ward, and states that a par ent's presence can ease fears and speed recovery without upsetting hospital routine. Winners of Pet Contest Announced Central Point-Winners in eight divisions of a pet con test were named Friday morn ing at a program sponsored by school district 6C and Cen tral Point at the Central Point Junior High school grounds. The contest was part of the recreation program sponsored by the school district and the city for Central Point area children. Don Miller was in charge of the program. Winners included a dog, Candy, owned by Larry John son, first in the mutt divi sion: a skunk "named Eliza owned by Sharon White, un usual pet; a rabbit named Blackie owned by Georgia Brittsan, blackest pet; a dog named Tinker Bill owned by Gary Green, shortest legged pet; a rabbit named Snowball owned by Vivian Brittsan, whitest pet; a turtle named Skippy owned by Steven Pink- ham, smallest pet; a kitten called Fluffy owned by Vickie Harper, pet with most un usual design; and a shepherd dog, Trina, owned by Richard Cote, largest pet. Zion Hos pital and Medical center is cited in the story as a leading exponent of the plan. Eliminates Day Hours In adopting this policy, Rogue Valley- hospital has eliminated day visiting hours for patients entirely in the ward, and even provides cots and reclining chairs for par ents who wish to remain over night. The all night visit, how ever, is limited to visitors call ing on private-room patients, Charles Gustafson, hospital administrator, noted. In some cases, dependent on the, child's condition, the phy sician in charge of a case may restrict visiting privileges, he said, but otherwise the hos pital not only welcomes the mother, but demonstrates its hospitality by serving her cof fee from the cart service oper ated by the Rogue Valley La dies auxiliary. Alleviating a child's fear is given special concern in sur gical cases, and before the pa tient is taken into the oper ating room he, is already sleepy from a sedative. Mean while, his parents are kept in formed of the surgical pro gress, notified of its comple tion, and advised exactly when the child will be return ed to his room. Contribute to Moral Also contributing to the morale of the pediatric divis ion is the service given by junior members of the hos pital auxiliary. Called Candy-Stripers" after their red and white striped uni forms, the young aides help feed the youngsters, read to them, join them in watching television, and in general add to the cheerful atmosphere of of the youthful ward. Birth days and holidays are also observed by the hospital kit chen and call for special tray favors, all of which helps the valley medical center to in ject a homelike atmosphere into its children's ward. The total is 1,359 more than the number who visited the museum during June, 1958, she said, and it brought the total attendance since July 10, 1950, to 337,470. Last month's attendance was the greatest for any June since the museum opened, she noted Visitors last month came from 38 states, Washington, D.C., Canada, England, For mosa, France, Japan and Pak istan. Eighth grade classes from Murphy and Ft. Vannoy brought the total of visiting school children, this spring to 2,804. Several other groups also visited the museum. Alabama Men Plead Guilty in Court Three Alabama men plead ed guilty Thursday afternoon in Jackson county circuit to charges of burglary not in a dwelling. Sentencing was con tinued pending receipt of FBI reports. The three who are charged with burglary of O.K. Rubber Welders, Highway 99, north of Ashland, Monday, are Lin dell Worth Messer, 23, Ox ford, Ala.; James Earl Quates, 23, and David Scott Quates, 26, both .of Georgianna, Ala. The three admitted in sign ed statements that they had taken tires, a speed wrench, fishing equipment and other items. Local Company Gets Plaque for Service Medford Motors last week was presented a plaque by the Mercury-Edsel - Lincoln divi sion of the Ford Motor com' pany in recognition of out standing achievement in es tablishing and maintaining quality service.
